About Ian
I lectured in painting and figure drawing for about three years, while also studying other disciplines at the same time. I also freelanced in illustration for several years, for all manner of advertising and TV, but with an emphasis on medical illustration and 'moved to the digital art world' very early on - during which time I also helped and taught my fellow 'non-digital' colleagues how to transfer their skills.
While owning and running my own multimedia/design/video business in South Africa, with a partner and 11 permanent staff, I managed, trained and mentored my staff, and also held separate painting and drawing classes in the evenings and weekends.
I can happily say that a number of my art director 'contemporaries' retained their respective jobs as a result of my equipping them with the necessary digital skills in the then 'changing world'.
As mentioned I also trained quite a number of my own staff in various media and a number of them are art and creative directors, media business owners and successful artists themselves today.

With a degree and background in Final Art, I have worked across the visual arts for over 40 years. I freelanced as a 2D and 3D illustrator and graphic designer. I was an Art and Creative Director with two well known international Ad Agencies. And most recently I was the Senior Multimedia Producer (and team lead) with a major London university.
With a 'mix' of both traditional and digital skills, I teach in various mediums and on various levels...
I prefer a 'project teaching' and 'problem solving' approach - where one selects the 'creative path' and medium and then takes it 'end-to-end'... i.e from concept, sketch or scan, through the creative process and to 'final product'.
(I believe in the direct 'hands-on' approach and tend to avoid the theory or 'learn from the manual' style...)
By way of one example: One might start with a sketch for a greeting card... bring it into Photoshop, 'clean it up' or modify it, then take it into Illustrator... turn it into a vector image... create the background, font, style, colour scheme and finally prepare it for litho or digital print and/or print it oneself...

I know he is my brother but I also know that this man really knows his stuff. I would highly recommend his tutoring in any form of art or IT. A huge thumbs up!
Oh my word - Ian is the very best !!
I have known Ian for the past 25 years. He is a hugely, multi-talented artist. Not only painting with oils, but also water colours and pencil sketches to name but a few. However, his knowledge and talent is not only limited to traditional paintings, but also covers digital art and in fact his talent pertaining to art as a whole is vast. One of his greatest qualities is his willingness and love to share his knowledge with others by way of teaching. I have personally learned so much from Ian and I know I will still learn much more. He is such a patient tutor and I cannot recommend him highly enough! I know without a doubt, that anyone learning from Ian will be hugely blessed and learn so much!
I’ve known Ian for many years. He is an amazing artist, great friend and a great choice for your personal tutor! I know you’ll learn from him and enjoy the experience.
Ian has such a gentle and reassuring way of teaching. You know you are safe to ask endless questions and he has such patience, listening and sharing his wealth of knowledge. It doesn't matter whether someone is a beginner or has been an artist for many years, Ian has a way of teaching everyone and you come away feeling like you cannot wait for the next lesson.
Ian has given lessons throughout his career as an Artist and I have watched him encourage and support beginners and accomplished artists, alike. He is confident, with many years of experience in all mediums.
Ian has been an artist for many years (40+) and has worked in every medium of art. He is a very passionate and talented artist. His experience and knowledge will be an asset to Superprof to give lessons to any age of person interested in learning. I highly recommend Ian for this position!
I have known Ian for well over 15 years, having worked with him on both 2D and 3D projects in the media industry. As a traditional Graphic Artist and Illustrator who had transitioned from creating artwork 'by hand' to computer generated graphics, I hadn't yet used any 3D software. Ian helped me to learn Cinema 4D and Poser, and his teaching style was both inspiring and nurturing.
Ian has a superior knowledge of design and illustration. He constantly keeps up-to-date with software programme updates and learning new ones. His technical ability is second to none, and I would highly recommend Ian as a tutor to anyone wanting to improve their technical skills, learning from a master. I wouldn't be where I am today without Ian's expert advice and encouragement.Besides his wealth of knowledge, his exceptional talent and a vast range of experience and skills Ian is also committed to humanitarian activities and is actively engaged in community and charitable work. This says much for his character and personality.
As a retired Design School head and having employed and worked with many lecturers, tutors, researchers etc over the last 32 years I would certainly recognize the rare combination of skills and knowledge that Ian would be able to contribute at any level.View more recommendations
