About Joshua

I am a Maths teacher currently teaching at a secondary school, with over 5 years of tutoring experience helping students achieve their best. Many of my students have gone on to excel in their exams, and continuing to take mathematics further!

I come from Northern Ireland and achieved an A* at A-Level and an A at GCSE in Mathematics, which sparked my passion for the subject. I went on to earn a First-Class Maths Masters degree from Lancaster University and now live in Manchester. I love Mathematics and would be excited to help you discover its beauty and boost your confidence.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always been interested in tutoring, and inspiring other people to love the subject that I love. I have always loved collaborating with other pupils, but I developed my passion for teaching further during my undergraduate years. The joy of helping classmates, and learning from other students, to understand complex concepts sparked a desire to share knowledge. Private tutoring became the next step, as I saw the personalized attention it offered students, allowing me to tailor my approach to their unique learning styles.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less)

I specialize in teaching mathematics, a subject that underpins a lot of the real world, which is why I believe it is so important. My favourite part to develop has always been statistics, and I have always been inspired by data, and visualising data. I really enjoy exploring algebraic concepts with students, witnessing the moment when abstract ideas click into place. Calculus and its applications are also areas I find captivating. On the other side, I understand that some students may find certain topics, such as advanced trigonometry or complex number theory, more challenging. My goal is to make even these topics accessible and engaging through clear explanations, engaging with the pupils, and attempting real-world examples.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

In my secondary school, I had a Mathematic teacher who really made maths click for me. She presented math subjects in different ways, and taught me to visualize most issues on paper, which really helped me develop into the mathematician that I am today. I specialize in teaching mathematics, a subject that forms the foundation for various disciplines. I particularly enjoy exploring algebraic concepts with students, witnessing the moment when abstract ideas click into place. Calculus and its applications are also areas I find captivating. On the flip side, I understand that some students may find certain topics, such as advanced trigonometry or complex number theory, more challenging. My goal is to make even these topics accessible and engaging through clear explanations and real-world examples.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

There are many key skills in to be able to tutor, and the key is being able to build a healthy relationship with the pupils to engage learning. A relationship that allows patience, adaptability, clear communication, and a passion for the subject are essential. The ability to break down complex ideas into manageable parts, provide constructive feedback, and tailor teaching methods to individual learning styles are crucial aspects of effective tutoring.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

There have been many days that stand out. I completed a placement within a primary school and watching a pupil find the answer to a problem they could not do was the best feeling for me from teaching. (Subject related to factors in primary school)
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I am currently completing my degree, and have struggled with proofs relating to real analysis, and proofs regarding the inner workings of calculus, at the higher end of university level. Hopefully, within my studies this year, I will be able to improve on this front 😊
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Teaching is my passion. Witnessing the transformation of students as they grasp challenging concepts, overcome hurdles, and develop a genuine enthusiasm for learning brings immeasurable fulfilment. I find joy in creating an engaging and supportive classroom environment where curiosity is nurtured, and intellectual growth flourishes. The ability to guide students on their educational journey and equip them with the tools for success. Teaching extends beyond the transmission of facts and formulas; it is about instilling confidence, resilience, and a thirst for knowledge that extends far beyond the confines of the classroom.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

My commitment to fostering a positive and engaging learning environment, coupled with a genuine enthusiasm for mathematics, sets me apart. My aim is not only to impart knowledge, but to inspire a lifelong love for problem-solving and critical thinking in my students.
