You are probably aware that Isabella Bird was an explorer at a time when exploration was pretty much a male-only pastime. She travelled to Australia, the Sandwich Island (hawaii) and wrote about her travels. As a result, she became the first woman inducted into the Royal Geographical Society. We don't hear much about the RGS now, but it was a very important institution in her time, particularly as Africa was being 'explored' by europeans at the time.
She was originally advised to travel, by her doctor, on health grounds. probably didn't expect her to go so far. She was a very popular travel writer in her day. As well as Australia etc; she went to China, malaysia, America - pretty much everywhere...
