If too much salt is outside the cell it means the solution is hypotonic. This means that water will leave the cell to create a balanced isotonic solution. Because water is leaving the cell, the cell will shrink.

Try this at home.... get a stick of potato (peeled) and place in strong solution of salt and water. Leave for a while and observe what happens to the potato chip? What has happened to the cells that make up the potato tissue?
