In it's simplest form, an axon terminal is the part of a neuron at the end of it's axon that forms a synapse with another neuron.
Generally, the axon terminal is the point at which a neuron passes information in the form of impulses to the neurons with which it is connected.

I've always found diagrams like this the best way to visualise an axon terminal it is essentially another name for a synapse.
