How do I write a good AS sociology essay?

The main thing to remember when writing a good essay is the audience that you are writing to. So often, it is easy to forget that you need to actively demonstrate your knowledge and understanding to the examiner - almost treating them like a dummy and not assuming that they will 'know what you mean' by things.

Avoid the tendency to "suitcase" everything you know about a topic and splurge it on a page. Try to firstly identify your point/question - decode it - what does it require you to do? Examine or Assess? What type of assess question is it? A straight forward for and against one or one which requires you to compare/contrast arguments as well as criticise all the way through.

Once you have decoded the question and have identified your first point - you need to decide what information is relevant to the question.

The last thing you should do is to make a clear link back to the question -if you do this regularly you will demonstrate your knowledge and understanding.

Only include relevant information! Try to then link what you have just written to modern society - what topical examples suggest that your point is relevant/irrelevant or outdated - show the examiner that you can make these links to society.

Just remember 60% is A01 and the rest is A02. In other words, evaluation and analysis are vital.
