About Jack
Hi there! My name is Jack, I'm a musician, teacher, artist... I got my Master's in Music from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in 2023, and since then I have been busy teaching, performing and working on various projects.
Most of my work comes through teaching, and I have experience with individual, small groups and whole class teaching. My approach to teaching is that it should be structured, with an emphasis on lateral learning.
You will often be writing your own music when learning new material, and you will learn to think aurally, visually, and physically about the music you are playing.

I like to start my lessons with a check in on how your week was. That's always important!
Instrumentalists begin with a quick warm up, such as long notes, scales, finding the keys etc - something to get into the headspace of the instrument.
Normally, you will have some music we have been working on, so we will get on with that, picking up from where we left off last lesson.
Throughout the duration of the lesson, I will be asking you why you are doing this or that, what your decision-making process is (for example, when learning notation :"how have you concluded that this written note is C?").
Some people like to power on with learning a syllabus (eg. ABRSM grades), others prefer to learn through exploration, and I find that in those cases, composing your own music is an excellent way to learn and internalise musical concepts.
I write in a notebook – I always like to double check my student has understood the lesson's concepts, and crucially – that they know *what* and *how* to practise.
Obviously, everyone is different, and this is a *very* general description of what our lessons could look like!
