About Martha
Hello, I'm Martha, and I am going into my final year studying English at the University of Cambridge. I love my subject, and find myself particularly interested in where science and literature find common ground, for example, in thinking about poetry and climate change. I have been lucky enough to find myself at Trinity Hall, one of Cambridge's oldest colleges. In my first year, I received the Margot Heinemann prize in recognition of getting the highest results in my cohort, while in second year, I achieved a 'Class I with Distinction' overall.
I have enjoyed tutoring A Level English for over a year now, and am enjoying seeing progress in my students, and fostering a real enjoyment for the subject. In addition to this, I have worked with the Oxbridge Launchpad as a mentor, supporting students towards applying to Oxford or Cambridge. I have also been part of the Oxbridge Launchpad's mock interview week.
My lessons are for students working towards their GCSE or A Level in English Literature, or those who are looking to apply to Oxford or Cambridge and wish to have support with personal statements, interviews, or the ELAT exam, all of which I have recent experience of. I believe my A*s in A Level English Literature, Geography, Biology, and EPQ, as well as First-Class results in my first two years studying English at Cambridge, makes me an ideal tutor for those looking for additional support in these areas.
I have gained valuable knowledge of the Oxbridge application process by working as one of the college's ambassadors, supporting with access webinars and open days. I am keen to enthuse others with the passion I have found for literature, broadening horizons, and opening up new opportunities, as well as making Oxbridge appear a more accessible place!

As a student at university, I have recent experience of sitting A level and GCSE exams, and so am able to connect on a closer level with students to foster confidence in a subject I am truly passionate about. Formal yet conversational and hopefully fun, a typical lesson lasts 1 hour, in which the first five minutes are spent generally catching up, recapping difficult aspects of the previous lesson, and explaining how the lesson will work. In the main bulk of the lesson, we discuss textual extracts, or plan answers to past paper questions. In the final few minutes, we summarise what has been learnt and answer any questions the student still has. We will work together in developing technique specific to each exam board, as well as a wider appreciation for the subject which will inevitably feed into an increase in exam confidence. Mostly, though, the lessons are student-led, and I am always interested in what my student wants to learn, or feels they would like more support with. Of course, there is no one-size-fits-all method, so my approach is flexible and specific to each person!
