Here is part of a booklet we teach from.
ARISTOTLE
Two thousand years ago he wrote in his POETICS that a play should have 6 basic elements.
• CHARACTER
• ACTION or PLOT
• THOUGHT or IDEAS
• LANGUAGE
• MUSIC
• SPECTACLE
I remember it as the following:
Character
Language
Action
Idea
Music
Sound
Claims…. Silly word for not so silly ideas.
Today, we tend to think of a story as CHARACTER based- Aristotle did not – he believed that ACTION was the key – and if we think carefully- what do you recall about a play or a film? Or a story that someone told you? It is the STORY – the ACTION- isn’t it?
Well we could argue this for centuries, but as a play write, you cannot tell a story if you do not know the characters.
Just as the greatest drama teachers have illustrated (Strassburg, Stanislavski etc) that acting is believing OR BEING…
The same applies in writing.
And for many of us in this business- Action is the key – and this is why…
1. CHARACTER
Nothing is good or bad- but thinking makes it so…..
If you do not know your characters, then nor will the audience and then you will have committed the worst sin in theatre. The audience will be bored- they will not find your characters compelling.
