Each session is tailored to each individual's needs. Together we will determine why the current teaching method is not suitable for you and work out a more successful method to understand the subject matter. I understand how frustrating it can be (as I have also been in that position!) and get satisfaction from helping people through that barrier, ultimately being more comfortable and competent with the topic at hand.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in accounting began during my high school years. I was fascinated by the logic and structure behind financial statements and how they tell the story of a business's health and operations. This curiosity only grew as I pursued my BA in Accounting, where I realized that accounting is not just about numbers-it's about understanding and solving real-world business problems.
My passion for private tutoring started in university. I found myself often helping classmates who struggled with accounting concepts, and I enjoyed seeing the moment when everything 'clicked' for them. That sense of satisfaction, coupled with my desire to help others overcome their academic challenges, led me to start tutoring formally. Over the years, tutoring has become a way for me to share my knowledge and help others succeed, which is immensely fulfilling.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, and Finance. These subjects are essential for anyone pursuing a career in accounting, finance, or business management. I enjoy discussing the practical applications of accounting principles, such as how to analyze financial statements, make informed business decisions, and manage budgets.

One of my favorite topics is Management Accounting because it involves using accounting data to inform business strategy and improve operational efficiency. It's where accounting meets management, and I love helping students see the impact their work can have on a business.

While I'm passionate about most areas of accounting, I find topics that involve rote memorization-like certain tax laws or compliance regulations-a bit less exciting. However, I understand their importance and work to make them as engaging and understandable as possible for my students.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, during my undergraduate studies, I had a professor who truly inspired me. She had a unique ability to make even the most complex accounting concepts seem simple. Her teaching style was engaging and interactive, which made learning enjoyable and less daunting. What stood out the most was her genuine care for her students' success. She always went the extra mile to ensure that everyone understood the material, and this approach has influenced my own teaching philosophy. I strive to be that kind of tutor-one who is approachable, patient, and committed to each student's progress.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs to be patient and empathetic, as students often come with varying levels of understanding and confidence in the subject. Communication is also key-you need to be able to explain concepts clearly and in different ways until the student grasps them.

Adaptability is another crucial quality. Every student is unique, so a tutor must be able to adjust their teaching style to meet the individual needs of each learner. Lastly, passion for the subject and a genuine interest in the student's success are essential. When students see that their tutor is enthusiastic and invested in their progress, it can significantly boost their motivation and engagement.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During my time at university, there was a particular course on advanced financial accounting that most students found intimidating. The concepts were dense, and the professor's lectures were fast-paced. Many of my classmates struggled to keep up, and so did I initially.

Recognizing the challenge, I organized small study groups where we could discuss and break down the material at a more manageable pace. One day, while explaining a particularly tricky concept on consolidation accounting, I noticed that the more I simplified the concept, the more my classmates began to understand. That experience taught me the value of breaking down complex ideas into simpler, digestible parts-something I now apply in my tutoring sessions. It was also the moment I realized that teaching was not just about knowledge, but about communication and connection.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the biggest challenges in accounting is staying updated with the ever-changing standards and regulations. Accounting is a dynamic field, with new guidelines, frameworks, and laws being introduced regularly. This means continuous learning is essential to ensure that the knowledge I impart to my students is current and relevant.

Another challenge is helping students overcome the fear of accounting. Many students approach the subject with a preconceived notion that it's difficult or boring. Overcoming this mindset and helping them see the practicality and importance of accounting in everyday life is a challenge I continuously face-but one I find rewarding when I see their perspectives shift.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion lies in teaching and making a difference in students' academic journeys. I particularly enjoy the challenge of finding creative ways to explain difficult concepts and seeing the progress my students make over time. Beyond teaching, I'm passionate about continuous learning and professional development in accounting. I regularly attend seminars and workshops to stay at the forefront of the field.

Outside of accounting, I have a deep interest in economics and how financial systems influence global economies. This interest often finds its way into my teaching, where I incorporate real-world economic scenarios to make the subject matter more relatable and engaging for students.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

What makes me a Superprof is my dedication to each student's success. I'm not just a tutor-I'm a mentor, a guide, and a partner in their learning journey. I bring over 15 years of tutoring experience and practical industry knowledge to the table, offering my students not just theoretical understanding but insights from real-world applications.

I'm committed to creating a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. I believe that with the right guidance, anyone can master accounting, and I'm here to help them achieve that.
