About Andrew

ABOUT ME: (in brief)

Hi! My name is Andrew, and I'm a professional freelance composer and pianist, based in West London. Currently I am a Composer with the ABRSM, and a Royal Philharmonic Society Composer for 2021-22. I was the recipient of the 2021 Dankworth Prize for Jazz Composition. Other than music I really enjoy coffee, hiking, and playing football (when I'm not injured, that is).

I've been really passionate about education and sharing my love for music with others since an early age. I feel that music is a really rewarding discipline to be familiar with, not only for its own innate benefits but also for the way it compliments and rounds out all other aspects of our lives.

I am an experienced private teacher and tutor, having done so since 2014 back in Australia, before moving to London to further my studies at the Royal College of Music. I'm a firm believer that everyone has musical potential, and can tap into it in a fulfilling and rewarding way, no matter the discipline, with the right kind of guidance. My lessons typically last 60-90 minutes and are delivered with a personalised, tailored approach, both depending on subject and ability level, as well as any individual student's particular learning strengths, short term goals, overarching targets, and general interests. I teach all ages and ability levels, so if any of this might interest you please get in touch! ----------

COMPOSITION:
Everyone has the ability to write music, and as a teacher I see my role as being to help get the absolute best out of my students, whilst keeping them engaged with their craft, and having fun alongside. Often our lessons will use your music as a launching-off point - either for further discussions of how you want to develop your piece, the offering of listening and reading resources related to your work, or even just the act of yourself writing more of your music under guidance. We would also cover aspects of compositional technique, depending on your own ability level and particular compositional interests - including both the standard things like theory, counterpoint, and aural skills, but also some more bespoke exercises to help sharpen your creative instincts. ----------

PIANO (CLASSICAL AND JAZZ):
As with all my teaching, my priority is always to keep the student's goals in mind. When it comes to Piano, sometimes this will take the shape of graded examinations (such as through the ABRSM, with which I am a current Composer mentee), or other forms such as recitals, competitions, and auditions (particularly for conservatoire). I hold an Associate Diploma in Piano from the AMEB, and am an active jazz pianist, having played on stage at the Royal Albert Hall amongst others. ----------

SUBJECT TUTOR - IB MUSIC SL + HL:
I studied the IB in high school and achieved a 44/45, with 7s in all subjects, including Music HL. I am familiar with the new syllabus for 2022 and am able to provide specific support and tuition across its entire assessment pattern, including written work (in addition to other practical assessments already covered above, such as performance and composition).
