Liverpool has a strong badminton tradition. Thanks to local leisure centres, long-established clubs, and the Liverpool & District Badminton League, founded in 1939, its badminton heritage goes way back. While many cities' badminton scenes are mostly found in leisure centres, Liverpool is very club-driven. Players can start with casual community sessions and progress to structured clubs, such as KCF Badminton Club or Wavertree BC.

Badminton Courts Liverpool – Leisure, Universities, and Greenbank

Much like playing badminton elsewhere in the UK, the three types of places you can play badminton in Liverpool are leisure centres, university sports facilities, and independent halls. Typically, these places are affordable, especially for students and residents, who can enjoy discounts. There are different ways to book each.

Lifestyles Leisure Centres: The city council's Lifestyles network runs badminton across more than a dozen sites, making it the most accessible option for many players. Courts cost £9.35 per hour for adults and £4.70 for juniors or concessions, with a daily time slot cap of two hours. Bookings are handled through the Lifestyles portal or app, and locals say evening courts can go fast.
University of Liverpool Sports Centre: With 8 courts in the city centre, UoL offers one of the best-value options for non-members. You can hire a court from as little as £4, though non-members must also pay an admission charge. Students and staff get discounted rates, and racquets or shuttles can be hired at reception.
Greenbank Sports Academy: Located near Sefton Park, Greenbank is an independent sports hall popular with both clubs and casual players. Courts cost around £12 per hour, and bookings can be made by phone, email, or via Pitchbooking. The venue has a strong sense of community and frequently hosts league fixtures.

First-Hand: Playing Social Badminton in South Liverpool

A good way to get started with Badminton in Liverpool is with the South Liverpool Badminton Club's "No Strings" sessions. These are evenings designed for fun, fitness, and community rather than playing badminton competitively. Players can meet twice a week at a local hall (Mondays for beginners and Wednesdays for intermediates). Prices are affordable, ranging from £5 to £6.50 per session, with sessions typically lasting two hours.

This is a low-cost, no-commitment badminton session that makes the sport accessible to everyone. Whether you want some exercise, would like to make new friends, or need a way back into the sport after some time away, this type of badminton is welcoming and affordable.

Liverpool Badminton Clubs

Many of Liverpool's badminton clubs feed directly into the Badminton & District Badminton League. Club players can join at every level, and there are different clubs for different types of players. Some are more welcoming to newcomers, whereas others are better for serious or competitive players. Take a look at a few we've selected here.

Notable Clubs

South Liverpool Badminton Club: A mix of social and competitive opportunities, including the popular No Strings sessions for beginners and intermediates.
KCF Badminton Club: One of the city’s largest, running multiple teams across league divisions. Welcomes visitors and has structured club nights each week.
Wavertree Badminton Club: Based at St Francis Xavier’s College, Wavertree is a long-standing club with a reputation for great community spirit.
Liverpool Badminton Club (UoL): University of Liverpool fields three men’s and two women’s teams in BUCS leagues, alongside a thriving student club.
LJMU Badminton Club: Active through JMSU Sport, offering training sessions and matches for students at all levels.

A very friendly club, welcoming to players of all standards, with opportunities to play both socially and in matches.

The Liverpool & District Badminton League

The Liverpool & District Badminton League is one of the oldest and most active in the country. It was established in 1939 and for decades has brought together many of Liverpool's badminton clubs. It runs men's, women's, and mixed divisions across multiple levels. Much like the badminton leagues in London, the season usually begins in October and runs through into the spring, which gives players a structured pathway to club nights and competitive fixtures.

Students and Badminton: University of Liverpool and LJMU

Students in Liverpool have excellent access to courts and clubs. Both the University of Liverpool (UoL) and Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) have facilities. Booking them, just like booking university badminton courts in Manchester, is usually different to local leisure centres and community sessions.

🎓 University of Liverpool (UoL)

The Sports & Fitness Centre has 8 courts and welcomes both students and the public. Court hire starts from £4, though non-members must also pay an admission charge. UoL also fields three men’s teams and two women’s teams in the BUCS league, giving students a direct route into competitive play.

🏫 Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU)

The Copperas Hill Sport Building is home to LJMU Badminton Club, which trains multiple times a week and competes in university leagues. Students benefit from discounted memberships and modern facilities, with coaching sessions tailored to beginners as well as advanced players.

Coaching, Juniors, and Pathways for New Players

What about for those new to Badminton? There are plenty of coaching options in Liverpool to help you get started. Local clubs and venues offer pathways for all levels.

South Liverpool BC runs adult group coaching alongside its No Strings sessions, priced at around £5 per class.

KCF Badminton Club provides structured coaching for juniors, often feeding players into league competition.

Greenbank Sports Academy and some Lifestyles centres also host junior and adult coaching blocks throughout the year.

Badminton England-qualified trainers offer private coaching for £25-£40 per hour, with group lessons costing £10-£15. Sessions will typically focus on technique, footwork, and match preparation for every level of player. Better yet, you can search for badminton on Superprof.

Booking a Liverpool Badminton Court

How you book a court in Liverpool depends on where you want to play. Council leisure centre, the university facilities, and independent venues all have different systems and rules. The same is true for booking badminton courts in Birmingham, too, with each city having mostly the same process.

How to Join a Liverpool Badminton Club and Get Started

Ready to get started with badminton? Whether you're playing badminton in Edinburgh, London, Manchester, or Liverpool, you still should decide whether you're interested in casual or competitive play first. We recommend that newer players start casual since it's more welcoming and easier to learn the basics.

Start social: Try a No Strings or community session to get used to the game and meet other players.
Test a club night: Many badminton clubs in Liverpool welcome visitors for a small fee (£5–£8) before you commit to membership.
Check the league calendar: September is when most clubs recruit for the new season, making it the easiest time to join.
Stay flexible: If you want occasional games, leisure centres and university halls provide easy pay-as-you-play access.

Of course, if you need more help, look for a badminton tutor on Superprof. There are tutors and coaches across Liverpool. With most offering the first session for free, you can even try a few before you get started.
