Quiz :How much do you know about Eurovision?
Also known as "Eurofestival", the Eurovision Contest has come a long way since its first edition in 1956 in Lugano, Switzerland. Since then, Eurovision has been held annually, with the exception of 2020 due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of participating countries has also increased from 7 countries in the first year, to 37 in this year's competition.
Despite its name, Eurovision also features countries outside of the EU or European continent as well. In fact, all countries where public television broadcasters are associated with the European Broadcasting Union are able to participate, including countries such as Turkey, Israel, Morocco, Georgia, Azerbaijan and even Australia.
The UK's Participation in Eurovision
The UK has a long and storied history in the Eurovision Contest. Its first debut was in 1957 and it has been a regular participant ever since. Because of its financial contribution to the European Broadcasting Union, the UK is also considered one of the "Big Five" countries along with Spain, France, Germany and Italy. This grants them an automatic qualification to the Eurovision final.
To date, the UK has 5 victories under its belt in 1967, 1969, 1976, 1981 and 1997. The UK has also achieved top placements, running second place in 1968, 1977, 1998 and 1999.
Another notable achievement for the UK was in 2002 when Jessica Garlick's song "Come Back" became the longest-running UK entry in the Eurovision charts, maintaining its position in the Top 100 for an impressive 16 weeks.
