Grief is the price we pay for love.

Queen Elizabeth II

Everybody grieves in their own way, according to their culture's norms and beliefs. Still, grief is such a universal expression of loss that even elephant herds have been observed grieving a fallen member. For all animals that grieve - including humans, sharing the experience is essential to their healing. With our gifts of thought and speech, we can put our sorrow into words.

Expressing Grief in Words

sentiment_dissatisfied
Grief-stricken Definition

A state of being overwhelmed with sorrow or distress, typically resulting from a serious loss.

The grief-stricken mind can hardly organise a thought, let alone find the words to express their feelings. Unlike quotes about romance that come tumbling out when in the thick of love, raging storms of grief blow all our words away.

Most societies frown on people perpetually rending their garments and gnashing their teeth. Overt displays of grief are permitted in the immediate loss but, over time, we expect the bereaved to calm down.

That doesn't mean wise words spring to mind on schedule. That's one reason why we rely on quotes about grief and loss to express our sorrow.

People who comfort the grieving person represent the other side of that coin. However, it's hard for people who've not experienced that specific loss to deliver comforting words when addressing it. So, we rely on universal themes, often couched in the most inspirational of words, to empathise with the bereft.

The Storm of Emotion Grief Provokes

Displays of intense emotion can leave family, friends, and onlookers unsure of how to respond. In those times, quotes about life's beauty have no effect. How can you respond to somebody who's all over the emotional map? In this Steel Magnolias clip, Sally Field gives a masterclass on grief-provoked emotional storms. And it shows how her friends ultimately find a way to help her cope.

Inspirational Quotes About Grief and Loss

Time is the healer of all necessary evils.

Menander

Grief doesn't just provoke a range of emotions; it also comes in successive waves. The nature of the loss and its immediate effects weigh the most, followed by the beginnings of healing and tentative steps to move on. Finally, the bereaved need inspirational words to let them know it's okay to cherish precious memories without feeling like they're living in the past.

The Greek poet quoted above delivered what amounts to 'time heals all wounds', one of the most famous quotes about time. We may believe that he considered loss a necessary evil, a profound idea that reflects the deeper 'circle of life' concept. However, one very famous woman didn't agree with time healing everything.

I do not agree. The wounds remain.

Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy

The mother of the slain American president, John F. Kennedy, had suffered enough loss (4 children!) to qualify her statement. She went on to say, "In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessens, but it's never gone."

Those two quotes represent the extremes of quotes about grief and loss. One is a general idea, suitable for many situations, for people you don't know that well. The second is a licence for the griever to forgive themselves for feeling less pain over time, a condition many grieving people feel guilty over1.

The words you choose depend on many factors: your degree of closeness with the grieving person, the type of loss they suffered, and where they are in their grief cycle. Here, we advance quotes you might use to comfort someone in the grip of despair - or yourself, if you've suffered a loss.

The Nature of Grief

Nobody knows what a monumental loss feels like until they experience one themselves. And even then, the most talented wordsmiths must rely on metaphors and similes to make the experience relatable. These quotes describe the magnitude of loss in terms everyone can understand.

Grief feels like fear, with a fluttering stomach, restlessness, and an invisible blanket between oneself and the world.

C. S. Lewis

This Irish writer suffered the devastating loss of his pet dog when he was four years old. For months, he insisted that everyone call him Jacksie - his puppy's name: a healthy grief response for one so young. At that age, he lacked the maturity to identify his feelings; fear was his best approximation of grief.

Grief is like a broken leg that never heals properly. It still hurts in cold weather but you can dance with the limp.

Anne Lamott

This American novelist gives few clues how she came upon her wisdom about grief. We know that she lost her father - her idol - at a relatively young age, but we could find nothing about broken legs. However, her visualisation is spot-on: the pain manifests when things are cold, and most of us dance with a limp from past hurts.

Sometimes, only one person is missing, and the whole world seems depopulated.

Alphonse de Lamartine

This French poet and statesman lived during one of his country's most turbulent times. Though he enjoyed relative comfort and luxury, he couldn't escape the hardship of loss. His first taste of grief came with the loss of both his children: first his infant son, and then his 10-year-old daughter. He was a prolific writer, but he died penniless in Paris, with even his wife leaving this world before him.

Quotes About Grief and Healing

Used judiciously, inspirational and motivational quotes can help a grieving person begin their healing journey. You'll find no recommended timeline to begin nudging the bereaved person towards moving on, though. Beware that offering these quotes at the wrong time could do more harm than good. However, when the time is right, these quotes about grief and love can work wonders.

Grief, I've learned, is just love. It's all the love you want to give but cannot.

Jamie Anderson

This quote is rightly attributed to its author, but she's wrongly credited as a Canadian writer for Dr Who. In fact, she is a blogger who wrote that while grieving the loss of her mother and her beloved pet. How absolutely beautiful that she identified grief as love that cannot be shared because its intended recipient is gone!

I should know enough about loss to realise that you never really stop missing someone ...

Alyson Noël

You might recognise this line from Ms Noël's first novel, Evermore. The character speaking that line goes on to say, "You just learn to live around the gaping hole of their absence." In its context, this line is profound; it comes from her Immortal bestseller series. It's a wise observation for anyone trying to move on.

We are healed of a suffering only by experiencing it to the full.

Marcel Proust

Reflecting on the sudden emotional storms that can overtake us even months after a loss, this saying is perfect for when you suddenly dissolve into tears. This popular French author tells us that we have to get all the tears out, no matter how long it takes. Offering this advice at the right time will do more for your grieving mate than any quote about deep friendship can.

Quotes About Grief and Remembering

As we begin to find our way out of our grief, we may become afraid that our healing means forgetting our lost loved one2. That's a natural emotion and a part of the grieving/healing process. As big a part of your heart they were, you're not likely to forget them. These quotes prove that.

How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.

Winnie the Pooh

Shifting one's perspective allows one to see their situation in a new light3. It's not sorrowful to say goodbye; it's beautiful that you had something so wonderful to say goodbye to. Pooh invites us to shift gears on our grief, a psychological tactic called 'cognitive reframing'. Even workplace seminars to foster teamwork use quotes that feature this type of focus-shifting language.

We bereaved are not alone. We belong to the largest company in all the world ...

Helen Keller

Each of us is alone in our grief, but everyone who has grieved is a part of the group. Ms Keller, whose entire life was hardship, was uniquely qualified to identify "the company of those who have known suffering."
