🎓 About Eton College

The College was founded in 1440 by Henry VI of England, making it one of the oldest boarding schools in England.

Formerly known as ‘Kynges College of Our Lady of Eton besyde Windesore’, the institution was initially centred on Latin and Greek scholarship before gradually evolving into a conventional school curriculum, supported by its distinguished faculty and exceptional facilities.

face
King’s Scholars at Eton College

Henry VI originally established it as a charity school to provide 70 disadvantaged boys with a free education as King’s Scholars, a scholarship tradition that continues today. These scholars were intended to progress to King's College, Cambridge, which he founded the following year.

Today, the 70 King’s Scholars at Eton College are spread across the five-year school cohort (Years 9 to 13), so each year group has roughly 14 scholars.

Today, Eton College is known as an all- boys’ full-boarding school for ages 13–18 that is guided by these three core historical pillars:

Academic Traditions

  • Still retain the King’s Scholars tradition for 70 students
  • Strong academic culture and Oxbridge preparation legacy

Sports Traditions

  • Continuing the legacy of the Eton Wall Game since 1717
  • Strong sports dominance in rowing and cricket

House Systems

  • The boys are divided into 25 boarding houses
  • Strong mentoring system to foster independence and leadership skills

If you are a parent who is looking for a school that embraces holistic education for your son, especially in scholarship, sport, and society, you should certainly start looking into the application requirements and process of Eton College.

🏫 What Makes Eton College Special?

By setting your sights high and aiming for a spot at Eton College, you will have to consider the level of competition that comes with the school's global recognition.

📖 Inside the Classroom: Academic Excellence & Innovation

Plenty of students will be gunning for the same spot and applying from overseas in the hope of obtaining this elite standard of education. Here are the latest available academic performance figures for Eton College — focusing on GCSE and A-Level grades. 2

2025 GCSE level A & A* grades

94.0%

2025 A Level A & A* grades

78.2%

In an interview with the Telegraph in 2015, the current Head, Simon Henderson, said that he envisions an Eton that continues to expect academic excellence from all its pupils.

A school that also recognises that “young people learn as much, if not more, from each other as from their teachers and as much, if not more, outside the classroom as within it." Educators at the City of London Boys' School would concur.

⚽Outside the Classroom: Rich & Diverse Co‑Curricular Programmes

Co-curricular programmes at Eton play a central role in Eton's curriculum with the goals of participation, performance, and enjoyment.

To be at a school where I can have a choir practice in the morning, rugby training in the afternoon, followed by Wall Game, a band practice and a Society talk all in one day is something one will simply not be able to do later in life.

⭐ Scholarships and Financial Support at Eton College

The major fee reductions at Eton come from bursaries, not scholarships. The institution offers bursaries that range from 5% to 100%, and reviews applications on a case-by-case basis — dependent on a family’s financial circumstances.

Scholarships at Eton are largely symbolic, recognising exceptional academic or musical talent. Although they usually do not significantly reduce school fees, they offer prestige and access to additional academic opportunities within the school.

The main exception is the Orwell Award, which is an entry award that offers fully funded sixth-form places at Eton to academically promising students from UK state schools.

Here is an overview of the financial support and recognition awards offered at Eton College:

✨ Step-by-Step Application Process for Eton College

Entry into Eton is highly competitive, similar to Radley College, as both are all-boys, all-boarding schools.

If you are a parent, you must register your son very early (before age 10½), long before the child actually enters the school at 13. Missing this deadline usually means waiting for the next possible intake.

The only exceptions to these strict registration deadlines are boys applying for the King's Scholarship or the Music Awards. 4

2033 entry13Sep 2019 – Aug 202031 Aug 2030

Here’s a checklist of items parents can prepare in advance:

A digital copy of your son’s unabridged birth certificate (must show parents' details)
Passport-sized photograph
Passport copy (for international students)
Latest school reports (from your son's current school)
Reference from current school or headteacher
Financial declaration to confirm their ability to afford school fees
Completed the bursary application form if applying for financial assistance

Now, let's have an overview of the application process from step one:

Step 1(Age: Before 10 1/2)

Complete online registration and payment

Step 2 (Age: 11-12)

Candidates sit for the ISEB Common Pre-Test

Step 3 (Age 11-12)

Eton will review the test results and references and inform the shortlisted candidates

Step 4 (Age 12)

Selected candidates will sit for the Eton List Test and attend the interview

Step 5 (Age 12-13)

Successful applicants will receive a conditional offer

Step 6 (Age 13)

Once students meet academic and behavioral standards at their current school, they will officially join Eton

📅 Application Timeline for 13+ Entry

If you are going to stack the odds in your favour, then you will need to meet several deadlines as you navigate the application process.

Here's a table that summarises the key dates for the application process when applying to Eton College for Year 9 (13+) Entry:

StageDate for 2026/27 Cycle (13+ entry for Sept 2027)
Registration Deadline31 August 2026 – strict deadline to register for 2027 entry.
Stage 1: Autumn Term of Year 6October–November 2026 – ISEB Pre-Tests window.
Outcome of Stage 1December 2026 – communication of Stage 1 outcomes.
Stage 2: Mid-January AssessmentMid-January 2027 – assessment for this group.
Stage 2: Late January / Early FebruaryLate January–Early February 2027 – assessment window.
Stage 2: Late February / Early MarchLate Feb–Early Mar 2027 – assessment window.

Outcomes of AssessmentsMarch, May & July 2027 – groups results published.

By meeting all of these key deadlines, you will put yourself in the best position to succeed in your application to this esteemed institution.

Important tip: Eton College reserves the right to reject and discard incomplete registration packages after 30 days. Unlike registering at Dulwich College, Eton does not negotiate on these principles. They can hardly afford to; they have far too many registrations to go through.

📤 Stage 1 Assessment: ISEB and School Reference

After registration, the first stage of assessment involves the Independent Schools Examination Board (ISEB) Common Pre-Tests.

Alongside this initial assessment, the school requires a report from your child's current head teacher outlining your child's academic strengths, interests, and personality.

This is a series of computer-based assessments that assesses a variety of skills in English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning, and Nonverbal Reasoning.

Test details

The score of the test is standardised according to the applicant's age.
The test consists of multiple-choice questions, and the duration is two and a half hours.

👥 Stage 2 Assessment: Eton List Test and Interview

When the applicant gets to Year 6, over the Spring and Summer, he will then be required to go through another online assessment (Eton List Test), this time being grouped according to the month of birth (when their birthday falls in the school year).

  • Birthdays between September and the first half of December: Assessed in late January/early February
  • Birthdays between the second half of December and March/April: Assessed in late February/early March
  • Birthdays between April and August: Assessed in late April/early May

Developed by cognitive testing experts associated with Cambridge University, this test assesses English, maths, verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning, and takes about one hour to complete.

Applicants who do well in the Eton List Test will be invited to an interview with a housemaster at Eton itself.

For the interview, Eton emphasises the importance of being able to contribute to school culture both socially and academically. Prospective pupils should be prepared to speak about their current curriculum and subject interests, just as they would for any other boys' school entrance interview.

Important info: Depending on what group you were assigned, you can expect to hear about the outcomes of your application when it is disclosed in March, May, or July.

🎒Guidelines for 16+ Entry

Although the vast majority of boys enter Eton at 13+, a limited number of placements are offered to boys entering Sixth Form. 5
