What Is Reggaeton? 🥁

Reggaeton is a vibrant music genre that blends Latin rhythms, hip-hop, dancehall and reggae influences. Originating in Puerto Rico in the late 1990s, it quickly became a global movement.
At its core is the “Dem Bow” beat, a repetitive rhythm that drives nearly every reggaeton song. Over time, artists have fused reggaeton with pop, trap and R&B to create new sounds that dominate charts around the world.

Today, reggaeton represents not only Latin music’s evolution but also empowerment, diversity, and fun, a rhythm that unites people across languages and borders.

Reggaeton meaning?

The word “reggaeton” (or reguetón in Spanish) comes from the combination of “reggae” and the Spanish augmentative suffix “-tón”, which loosely means “big” or “strong.”
So, literally, reggaeton means “big reggae” or “powerful reggae.”

Reggae 🇯🇲 vs Reggaeton 🇵🇷

Although reggae and reggaeton share Caribbean roots, they’re very different genres.

  • Reggae originated in Jamaica in the 1960s, with slower tempos, deep bass lines, and socially conscious lyrics (think Bob Marley).
  • Reggaeton, born decades later, borrowed reggae’s rhythm but added the Reggaeton beat, a faster beat, Spanish lyrics, of course and an urban flair inspired by US hip-hop.
