What Are The Different Vocal Types?

Vocal range types categorise voices based on their pitch and tone, from the highest to the lowest. Understanding your vocal range can help you choose the right songs and roles, and it’s essential for developing your singing skills effectively. Here are the main categories of vocal range

Soprano

Sopranos are the high-flyers of the vocal world! They have the highest female voices, hitting notes from middle C (C4) up to high C (C6) and beyond. Their voices are bright and clear, perfect for leading roles in operas and musicals, where they often get to shine with those super high, agile passages.

Mezzo-Soprano

Mezzo-sopranos sit comfortably between sopranos and contraltos. Their range is from A3 to A5, and they have a richer, darker tone compared to sopranos. They add depth and warmth to any musical piece.

Contralto

Contraltos have the deepest female voices, known for their rich, resonant sound. Their range goes from F3 to F5. If you hear a deep, velvety female voice, it's likely a contralto.

Tenor

Tenors are the high-pitched heroes of the male vocal range, singing from C3 to C5. They have bright, powerful voices and often play the leading roles in operas and musicals. Think of those epic, dramatic love songs—tenors have the range and power to nail them every time.

Baritone

Baritones are right in the middle of the male vocal range, spanning G2 to G4. They have warm, rich voices and often play the villains, fathers, or noblemen in musical pieces. Versatile and expressive, baritones bring a wide range of emotions to their roles.

Bass

Basses have the lowest male voices, hitting notes from E2 to E4. Their deep, resonant tones are perfect for roles of authority and wisdom, like kings, priests, and wise old men. If you need a commanding, powerful voice, a bass is your go-to guy.
