On Windrush day, UK families and communities can reflect properly on their sense of national identity, formulated and informed in no small part by the immigrants who first arrived on Windrush day in 1948. But what is Windrush Day 2024 so important for, over 75 years later, and how can you get involved?
?? What is Windrush Day in the UK?
Windrush day marks the day when, in 1948, immigrants from the Caribbean first started to arrive in the UK. These immigrants were invited by the British government to help rebuild the economy of a nation that was still reeling in shock from the second world war.
To this end, they were offered full citizenship since they were coming from British colonies, and in theory were going to be immediately integrated into British society. In practise, however, this was not nearly so simple.
In reality, they were treated very harshly by the locals, often facing racial and nationalist abuse just for existing.
This treatment was especially unfair when you consider that these immigrants were not only invited here by the British government, but also were in many cases holding the economy together.
They were working hard jobs, such as in steel production or in the newly formed National Health Service, but were still treated so poorly in spite of this. This is one of the main reasons Windrush day is celebrated.
Windrush day is an opportunity for communities to reflect on their past since they came, where those that were treated poorly can take pride in their national identity.
As well as this, those who were part of communities responsible for the poor treatment of these immigrants can take the opportunity to reflect on how society has been improved by the Windrush generation.
What is the Windrush generation?
But what actually constitutes this Windrush generation? While it is true that anyone who has immigrated to the United Kingdom can find meaning and value in celebrating Windrush day and using it to reflect, who are the Windrush generation actually?
The Windrush generation is generally defined as anyone who immigrated to the UK from the Caribbean between 1948 and 1971. This was a period marked by the arrival of the Empire Windrush ship in 1948, hence the name of the generation.
However, the Windrush generation is more than just the 1,000 or so passengers that arrived on the Empire Windrush, of course!
In general, anyone immigrating to the UK during this time period is likely in some way able to consider themselves a part of the Windrush generation. This can be especially powerful for those who struggle with a sense of national identity.
This is because members of the Windrush generation can identify not only wholly with the national pride of the country they emigrated from, but also the national identity of the UK.
Humans naturally tend to belong to a tribe, and while immigration can make this difficult, members of the Windrush generation can confidently say they belong to either or both tribes, depending on which they feel most strongly link to.
This sense of national identity being linked to choice is a very important and empowering one!
When is Windrush Day celebrated?
Windrush Day has been celebrated on the 22nd of June for the last 76 years, with Windrush day 2023 being the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the Empire Windrush ship.
Windrush day 2024 will therefore be the 76th in history, meaning there have now been Windrush day celebrations for over three-quarters of a century.
However, Windrush is notably not a bank holiday, although it has been gaining traction in recent years to become a very well recognised celebration. But how exactly can you celebrate it?
? Windrush Day Events Across the UK
By its very nature, how you choose to celebrate Windrush day is a very personal thing. There is no one right way to celebrate Windrush Day, and finding a way that allows you and your family to reflect is the most important thing to do.
Windrush Day is fundamentally about being proud of and at peace with, your national identity. This is about a sense of belonging to a larger community, a country that is unified together in our care for one another, in theory at least.
This is why community is a significant part of Windrush Day, both on a smaller and a larger scale. As such, many community-oriented places such as art galleries, museums, and community centres will put on events for Windrush Day.
These events will often have a focus not only on the original Caribbean heritage of the Windrush generation, but also their now considerable heritage as a part of the wider UK community. So how can you find local Windrush day events near you to help you celebrate your heritage? Well, they might just be more prevalent than you think!
?️ Windrush Art Exhibitions
Often, the easiest way to find out about art exhibitions and events, such as those celebrating Windrush day or other events, is just to spend time in your local community!
You will regularly see posters for these around your local area, or virtually the same is true if you look on local community Facebook pages. You can also typically find them listed on the websites or Facebook pages of local art galleries and the like, or even just community centres and other event spaces.
If you're near Bristol, The "Windrush: Portraits of a Pioneering Generation" exhibition at the Royal West of England Academy is not to be missed. The exhibit showcases ten portraits commissioned by King Charles III to mark the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush. Running from May 25 to August 10, 2024, the portraits highlight the resilience and pride of these individuals, who played a key role in rebuilding post-war Britain.

For many people, exploring the history and legacy of both the story of the Windrush generation and the many stories that follow on from their arrival can be a great way to get involved with Windrush day.
These events tend to be relatively common, often put on by the local community to help keep stories alive and being told. Stories have always been a way that humanity has embraced its history and identity, and sharing them is a wonderful way for a community to come together.
This is why these events have remained so popular, especially as a way for those who don’t know very much about the Windrush generation to become educated on their many important contributions to the British economy and way of life.
⚓️ National Maritime Museum Windrush Celebratio n
The National Maritime Museum in London is hosting a special celebration in honour of Windrush Day on June 22, 2024.
Activities will include talks, games, spoken word performances, and a Caribbean food and craft market. The event is part of the Great Greenwich Windrush Trail and is free to attend.
? Windrush Festivals
As with art exhibitions around Windrush day, festivals and community events are often easiest to find online and through local community boards and posters.
The Radiate Festival 2024, also known as the Windrush 76 Festival, will be held in Burgess Park, South London. This vibrant event celebrates the history and culture of the Windrush Caribbean migration and its impact on Black British communities. The festival features a new Saturday party playground and a Sunday carnival procession through Southwark, culminating in Burgess Park.
The Southbank Centre in London is holding celebrations featuring live music, dance, Caribbean food, spoken word performances, and carnival costumes. Highlights include a performance by the Jazz Jamaica All Stars Choir and the unveiling of the National Windrush Monument.

The Windrush Day Film Festival showcases documentaries and films about the Windrush generation, exploring their stories and contributions to British culture. The event includes panel discussions and Q&A sessions with filmmakers and historians. The event will take place from June 22-23, 2024.
