About Valery

My name is Valery Filippov and I am an international Grand Master with a 2656 USCF and a 2553 FIDE rating. I have been teaching online and OTB chess for 19 years. My best achievements as a player: * In 2000, I became the champion of the world amongst students. * In 2003, I joined the top 10 of the strongest chess players in the USA rating. * In 2005, I entered the top 50 of the best chess players worldwide. I have the tremendous experience of performances and victories at various international tournaments. I also participated in the Russian national team at the international chess Olympics in 2004. Among my competitors, there were the strongest international chess masters such as Michael Adams, Alexander Grischuk, Etienne Bacrot, Vassily Ivanchuk, Peter Leko, Peter Svidler, and others. About my teaching experience: I started teaching in 2004. I spent 9 years working at the Russian chess club. Since 2013, I have been teaching online. During this time, my students increased the rating by more than 5,000 points. I helped some students receive their first international chess titles (category). Others were interested in improving their online rating at chess com. My students repeatedly became champions of chess clubs, cities, and even states.

Every one of my students has an individual program. In the first stage, my goal is to estimate the skill set of the student. In other words – to understand the level of calculation, how good the opening repertoire is, if he has heard about endgame, etc. After that, we create the plan of work on openings. I say which openings we must improve as soon as possible and which ones have to be known for the future. Besides the openings, a very important point is endgame and strategy. Those are two most difficult elements. In the endgame, we are working on typical positions. I will explain which pieces should be taken to the endgame and which shouldn’t. I also like teaching strategy to my students. In most of the schools, it is not explained because it is tricky even for the coach. Throughout the years of my work, I have created about 30 strategy lessons, set special positions, etc. The practice shows that due to those lessons the student has his chess understanding increased. The most important thing is calculation. I will give pretty big home tasks which are dedicated to tactics. It can be a common winning calculation, opening or endgame calculation. I will control home tasks because experience shows that many students get relaxed and lazy as soon as they have a coach. However, I will not let that happen. All of my classes I usually make as a dialogue. It is never like I greet my student, talk throughout the class, and say goodbye. My main task is to make lessons informative and interesting. Let’s study together

Find out more about Valery

  • When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

When I was 4 y.o. only. My grandfather taught me to play this
wonderful game. At the age of 5 I joined the local chess club. From
the age of 7 I started playing tournaments.
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

My favorite chess player is Alexander Alekhin. By the way, one of my
first books about chess that I read was "Alexander Alekhine's 100 Best
Games". In my opinion, he is one of the strongest grandmasters of all
    time.
  • What are the qualities and skills required to succeed in this area?

First of all, it is discipline. Just like in any other sport. Aslo
    creativity and logical thinking.
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

The most important thing is the system! Every day, step by step, move
    towards your goal!
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

Now, chess is a good way for me to relax my mind and have fun. I love
playing against my students and friends. Also, 2-3 times yearly I
    attend OTB tournaments.
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

In the past, I have won many different tournaments, played against the
strongest grandmasters in the world. But as a teacher, I believe that
my main achievement is the victories of my students. My students
increased the rating by more than 5,000 points. I helped some of them
receive their first international chess titles (category). Others were
interested in improving their online rating.
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

Yes! I had an 81 year old student. After 8 months of training, he took
part in an international tournament and made a draw against a FIDE
    MASTER. I am still shocked.
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

I just love what I do. Chess is my job and my hobby at the
same time. Thank you Superprof for giving me the opportunity to be
    here.
