About Elizabeth

Hello! My name is Elizabeth!

I'm a 22 year old Poetry Masters Student. In my spare time I run poetry events, that entail a range of things, from teaching writing poems in pubs to performing on stage.

I have a First Class BA Hons in English Literature, a First Class Foundation degree in American Literature and I am currently preparing to apply for my PhD in creative writing poetry.

I'm friendly, bright and a bit of a nerd. My favorite poet is Seamus Heaney, and my favorite book series is the Twilight Saga. A lot of the essays I write focus on either intersecting feminism with literature or hip-hop, history and poetry.

I used to really struggle with my attention span and focus in school. I often wanted to write long, flowery essays about the things that interested me, and I often missed out on marks along the way, often because my writing missed the mark scheme. As I have gotten older, I have realised it's all about making studying work for you. Sometimes this involves working around what is simply a genuine distaste for a subject (fair enough) or sometimes it is something like finding studying techniques that work with neurodivergency, or ways to write and revise that take into account a lack of time.

Whatever the reason you need a tutor, hopefully I can help you find an answer to how studying works best for you, and turn over some decent grades or results along the way.

I teach any student over the age of 10, all the way to Undergraduate students, at any level of skill. I want my sessions to be accessible and straightforward. I have experience tutoring dyslexic students.
No two students are the same, therefore no two lesson plans will be the same. However, I approach all of my teaching with structure, including 6 week overview plans. I provide material for both within and beyond sessions.

TYPICAL SESSION STRUCUTRE:
Each session with me is 60 minutes long:
- A 20 minute first half that covers the theory and context of whatever we are looking at. From the 11+, to undergrad level, it is important to understand the 'whys', and try and negotiate some sort of interest, especially when a student might hate this subject or struggle with it. This normally involves looking at practice questions, theory texts and developing methods for writing that are catered to the individual. For example, creating an essay plan for university that not only works for a particular assignment, but also involves learning about structure in a way where the student can apply what they have learnt to a different scenario.
Followed by a 10 minute break where we can discuss the best studying and learning techniques for you! I work along a rough outline of the pomodore technique to make sure that students have the time to absorb information without any pressure.
The 20 minute second half where we try and put the relevant methodology into practice. Whether this is creative writing practice, learning to analyse a poem, exam question revision, editing of an essay extract, I always want students to walk away from a session with a sense of being armed with all the tools they need.
The last ten minutes covers anything they have struggled with this week; be that in school or the session. This allows us to prepare together for the week coming, and makes sure that our next session touches base with what the student needs.

ABOUT MY PRACTICE:
This sounds like a lot to cram into an hour - however, I have almost a years experience tutoring now and have found that as long as I listen, and take the time to be flexible around how an individual learns best, an hour is more than enough.
I am a very committed person; whatever level of study a person is at, I will work outside of our sessions to make sure I have the most up to date and wide ranging understanding of what I am teaching. This can look like anything from practicing my own verbal reasoning skills so I can teach the 11+, to revising the GCSE and A-Level English Literature texts regularly. The best thing about English Literature and Creative Writing is that there is rarely a wrong answer.
Once you know how to give an exam board what they want, the only thing left is to try and love studying it. For this reason, I always try and link back our studying to things that the student is interested in. Whether this involves teaching how to answer a GCSE exam question by framing it as a football match, or learning to write undergrad essays that link back to your interests, I will cater to you.
The education system is tricky enough - I want every student to know that someone has their back to make it a little bit easier, and maybe even a bit more enjoyable.
