About Tom
I am an English Master and Director of Universities at Eton College. Previously I was Head of English at Haileybury, and prior to that I lectured in English Literature at several universities and taught secondary English in two independent schools - I have 21 years’ experience teaching experience altogether. Most recently I have been teaching CIE IGCSE English Language and English Literature and Pre-U Literature in English; I also have recent experience teaching the IB Literature course and the OCR A level in English Literature. My other area of expertise is UK universities admissions. I aim to attune students to the subtleties of literary language, and to enable them to express their ideas and insights in cogent, precise English. I combine high expectations with a nurturing approach, tailoring every lesson towards the individual. Tom has an encyclopaedic knowledge of a wide range of literary periods and texts. But he is also able to communicate this clearly to students of all abilities. Whether you want help with 11+ admissions tests or submitting a graduate thesis, he’ll show you how to improve.
I have known Dr Day since June 2013. We taught together for three years at Haileybury College, a mixed independent boarding school for pupils aged 11-18. Dr Day was Head of the English department at Haileybury before moving on to Eton College where he currently teaches English and is Head of University Admissions. Having gotten to Dr Day very well over the years both in a professional capacity and on a personal level, I can confirm with complete certainty that he is a model teacher. He is incredibly knowledgeable and clever, but explains complicated concepts in a way that lesser mortals ( I include fellow teachers and pupils here) can understand.
He is caring and kind and I am sure that his pupils will benefit greatly from his expertise.
Please contact me at j.medcraft@haileybury.com if you require further information.
Yours faithfully,
Jonathan Medcraft
