About Jon
Using Teams I am an online science Teacher and Tutor of many years' experience. I have a passion to teach and assist pupils with their studies in a comprehensive manner to help them achieve the top grades. Whether you are someone who is struggling with your International Baccalaureate (Diploma sciences) or are wishing to improve your grades I offer a bespoke tutoring experience. I hold a bachelor's degree (Upper Second) in Applied Chemistry and a Master of Philosophy research degree in Mechanical Engineering with strong Physics and Biology components. In addition I hold a PGCE and am a qualified teacher registered with the DfE. I also have an enhanced DBS check, so you can be assured that I am "child safe". Apart from learners in the UK, I have tutored pupils in Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, China, Hong Kong, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Sudan, Sweden and Thailand. From this I have a wealth of experience with pupils for whom English is not their first language and who thus need extra emphasis and teaching on the correct uses of English and in particular subject-specific technical vocabulary. Consequently I also work to improve and ensure pupils' spoken and written English where necessary and their grasp of technical vocabulary. I believe the key to long-term retention and understanding lies in encouraging the pupil to work out a problem for themselves from first principles and engaging them through questions in order to enable them to discover the solution rather than using a “spoon-feeding” approach. In other words I generally prefer Socratic to didactic teaching methods to create a strong foundation from which the pupil may tackle more complicated or previously unseen problems.

My science lessons are now held online over Teams. A range of methods and techniques are used to ensure that pupils gain the level of knowledge that they require. Amongst these methods and techniques are: Presentations to impart factual knowledge (the pupil will receive a copy of these), Questions and model answers/solution and past exam questions to practise, demonstrate and extend understanding. Use of video to exemplify techniques, procedures and processes. Tutorials to resolve a pupil's current problems with understanding.

Jon has tutored my son for the last few months towards his GCSE Sciences.
Would highly recommend. We had the pleasure of working with Jon to support our Year 10 son in Chemistry. Jon is an outstanding tutor; highly knowledgeable, 100% reliable, and an excellent communicator. His engaging teaching style and great sense of humour made the sessions enjoyable and effective, which our son really appreciated. Most importantly, Jon helped build both his confidence and his understanding of the subject, resulting in noticeable improvements in both attitude and performance. We would not hesitate to recommend him.
Jon was really helpful giving extra support to my son during his GSCE preparations. He was very flexible and was able to switch between the 3 sciences at short notice depending on what was needed on any particular session.
Jon has been tutoring my son for the past year in Biology. Jon’s experience shines through the lessons with a systematic approach to the curriculum, a balanced structure of the lessons with questions for example to ensure understanding and a summary of what was taught in the end. My son’s performance in the subject improved substantially, and importantly he developed a genuine interest in the subject and enjoyed all lessons. I have no hesitation in recommending Jon for all science subjects.
We found Jon later than we’d like - just a few months before GCSE. Thankfully, Jon was very committed, very patient and clear in his explanation. He is also very prompt in his replies. Jon helped my son with Bio, Physics and chemistry and brought his grades from fail/borderline to 7s for GCSE. Thank you, Jon!
Jon is fantastic tutor. He has been teaching my son since Y8 through the high school and A levels. My son had to catch up with his studies after ABI following a car accident and had special requirements. Jon was very professional, from the very beginning he established good rapport with the student. We started seeing results just after several weeks. During all these years my son developed great interest in science, not only he caught up with school program, but got fantastic gcse results (9 &8). He enjoyed lessons with Jon so much that decided to continue at A level. With his fantastic grades he is now heading off to Manchester uni to study Physics.
My daughter, who was not very much into science managed to improve her scores and get 8 and 7 in her gcses! We are very pleased with Jon. He not only helped my children with their academic performance, but also developed their genuine interest in science! My son has been studying Chemistry and Biology with Jon for last 2 years through A levels and Jon has been really Brilliant. Jon was really enthusiastic, along with his great experience in teaching , he always kept me updated about my son's performance after each lesson. My son did enjoy the lessons and was benefiting from Jon's way of teaching. I would definitely recommend him.
Jon was recommended to us as an A'level Biology tutor by a friend. We contracted for ten lessons with Jon visiting weekly to prepare her over the summer for her final year. We got positive feeback from our daughter from the first.
Jon was completely professional, showed very good subject knowledge and was very well prepared throughout the tutoring period, providing a range of excellent resources in the form of presentations which were well laid out, engaging and informative and tightly linked to her syllabus.
He always arrived on time or early, was easy to get on with and our daughter felt very comfortable working with him.
We wholeheartedly recommend this excellent tutor.Jon’s response to our online search for an A Level Physics tutor for our daughter, with around six weeks before the exam, was typical of all his communications with us: prompt and clear. We booked one lesson to start with and got very positive feedback from our daughter so we booked ten more, with Jon visiting twice a week.
Our daughter had been revising and working through past papers for which her self-marking was indicating a C grade, B at a pinch. It was important to us that Jon was familiar with the exam board syllabus so we were reassured when our daughter reported that she could see folders for all the exam boards, including hers, on Jon’s laptop. During the lessons, our daughter presented Jon with some questions from past papers that she had found difficult. He demonstrated an excellent knowledge of the subject by guiding her through each of the questions without needing to be forewarned. He has supplied additional resources such as a presentation and the loan of a text book.
Jon has been utterly professional throughout the tutoring period. He has always arrived on time and we have been able to rely on him to help our daughter through this stressful time. It was obvious that he was interested in our daughter’s progress because he sent us messages, via the website, to keep us informed. He is very easy to get on with and immediately put our daughter at ease. We feel fortunate indeed to have found Jon and recommend him wholeheartedly.I write in support of applications made by Mr Jon Comerford for employment as a tutor or teacher, and to confirm that he is known by me to be of good character generally.
For over 9 years, Jon has provided his services as an educational consultant and tutor of mathematics, physics and chemistry, at both GCSE and A Level. His thoroughness and dedication have been outstanding, and he has been particularly effective as an educator.
Jon is highly regarded by his colleagues for his friendly, positive attitude, his inclination to resolve issues with minimal fuss, and his unfailing punctuality.
It may be of interest to know that Jon has occupied a position of trust, including with regard to maintaining his own timesheets, and there has never been any doubt as to his meticulousness and honesty.
I recommend Mr Comerford without reservation, and wish him well. This is a personal endorsement of Mr Jon Comerford as an excellent teacher and person of good character.
I have known Jon for perhaps eighteen years. For approximately four of those years (up until around 2004) I held a senior position at the a school where he was employed as Head of Science.
I recall easily that Mr Comerford was a key member of staff, consistent in his delivery of well-prepared, versatile and properly-paced lessons. In the classroom, Jon showed a natural authority to match his command of the material. Equally, Jon is able to adapt to a changing curriculum, accepting demands made upon him without hesitation or complaint.
I can also confirm that Mr Comerford’s general conduct, including time-keeping and personal behaviour, were exemplary, and that student outcomes were excellent.View more recommendations
