About Birjan
Hello! I’m a dedicated tutor with a degree in Business Finance from Hope College and a passion for helping students build confidence and mastery in their studies. I am a proud graduate of The Heritage Foundation’s Leadership Fellowship, where I specialized as a Fiscal and Monetary Policy Fellow, deepening my expertise in economic policy and financial systems. My professional background includes several years in corporate finance in Chicago, where I developed real-world skills that I now bring into my teaching. Along the way, I also participated in state-wide finance case competitions, honing both strategic thinking and practical financial analysis. Currently, I focus my work in the field of economics, blending academic theory with practical insights to help students thrive both inside and outside the classroom. I believe learning should be both rigorous and encouraging, and I’m excited to help you reach your academic and professional goals!

Teaching Method and Techniques
My instructional approach is structured, analytical, and highly adaptive to individual student needs. I begin by assessing each student’s current understanding, learning objectives, and preferred learning style. My teaching emphasizes breaking down complex finance and economics concepts into clear, manageable segments, supported by real-world examples and case studies to illustrate theoretical principles. I employ a range of techniques—including Socratic questioning, problem-based learning, and applied exercises—to foster critical thinking, deepen understanding, and promote long-term retention.
Typical Lesson Plan
Review and Diagnostic Assessment (5–10 minutes): A brief review of previous material or a short diagnostic to evaluate the student's starting point.
Objective Setting (5 minutes): A clear outline of the session’s goals and expected outcomes.
Conceptual Framework (20–30 minutes): Introduction of new theoretical concepts, supplemented by practical examples drawn from current economic or financial events.
Applied Practice (15–20 minutes): Collaborative problem-solving exercises or case study analysis to apply concepts in realistic scenarios.
Independent Application (10–15 minutes): Student-led problem sets or brief writing exercises to solidify understanding.
Summary and Reflection (5–10 minutes): Recap of key points, clarification of doubts, and assignment of targeted practice tasks for continued development.
Distinctive Qualities as a Tutor
Personalized Instruction: Each lesson is customized to align with the student’s academic background, learning goals, and career aspirations.
Practical Emphasis: I connect theoretical material to real-world finance and economic applications, enhancing relevance and student engagement.
Critical Thinking Development: I emphasize analytical reasoning and problem-solving, preparing students to think independently and perform successfully in academic and professional settings.
Professional Communication: I maintain a supportive yet rigorous learning environment, encouraging students to ask questions, engage deeply, and build confidence in their knowledge.
Commitment to Excellence: I continuously refine my instructional methods based on feedback and academic best practices to ensure optimal outcomes for each student.
Target Audience
My lessons are designed for:
High school students, particularly those enrolled in AP Economics, IB Economics, Business Studies, or introductory finance courses, and those preparing for university admissions.
College undergraduates, including students majoring or minoring in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or related fields who require support with coursework, exam preparation, or foundational concepts.
I work with students of varying proficiency levels, from those seeking remedial support to those aspiring to excel in advanced coursework or prepare for professional certifications.
