About Marjolein

Ek is oorspronklik van Nederland en het as jong uitruil student in Stellenbosch gearriveer. Ek weet uit eie ervaring hoe moeilik hierdie eenvoudig voorkomende taal kan wees! Oor die jare, soos my kennis en aanvoeling van die taal gegroei het, het my passie vir die taal ook toegeneem. Kom saam met my op 'n avontuur deur die taal en sien hoe dit jou lewe kan geur en kleur gee. Ek is lief vir taal - die skryf en lees daarvan. Ek is mal oor diere en spandeer baie tyd in die natuur. Ek begin my dag gewoonlik met yoga en meditasie.

About the lesson

Ek het 'n passie vir mense en taal en gebruik beide om my lesse te baseer op studente se belangstellings en doelwitte. Ek hou daarvan om die inhoud relevant en bruikbaar te maak sodat studente nuwe inligting dadelik kan toepas in hul daaglikse lewens. Samewerking en kreatiwiteit word aangemoedig. Elke les is uniek en pret! Ek gee gereeld terugvoersessies om die vordering wat gemaak is te bespreek.

My passie is letterkunde in al sy fasette! Ek is mal daaroor om studente te help om hulle begrip van en betrokkenheid by letterkunde te verbeter. Ek het groot sukses behaal om Matrieks te help om hul algehele punte te verhoog deur hul letterkunde- en skryfvaardighede te verbeter. Letterkunde moet geniet word - nie gevrees of gehaat word nie!

Ek is volledig tweetalig in Afrikaans en Engels. Ek het 'n BA graad in Afrikaans / Nederlands en 'n Meestersgraad in Sielkunde.

Ek het baie jare ondervinding in die onderrig van Afrikaans op alle vlakke met studente van oor die hele wêreld. Afrikaans is soveel meer as net grammatika en woorde leer. Kom ons ontdek saam die wye wereld van letterkunde en die magdom maniere waarop woorde en sinne uitdrukking kan gee aan 'n mens se diepste ek.

She’s incredibly kind, helpful, and has a way of making learning enjoyable—I often find myself laughing during our sessions. Her lessons are thoughtfully structured, but also flexible, focusing on what you personally need.

When did you develop an interest in your subject and in private tutoring?
I have had a passion for people and languages from a young age. I loved travelling to other countries with my parents and getting to know people from different cultures and the languages they speak. Language is what brings us together and reminds us we are all inherently the same.
Tell us more about the subjects you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
I teach languages (English and Afrikaans), life coaching (counselling and psychology) and energy healing (Reiki, Reflexology and Aromatherapy). I love talking about people's passions, what makes them "tick" and puts a smile on their faces - their interests, dreams and goals. I stay away from discussing politics, religion, economics and the like.
Do/Did you have any role models? Perhaps a teacher that inspired you?
I had a History teacher in high school that inspired me with his passion for teaching. He had the ability to make things come alive and relevant by telling stories. He made things easy to grasp and remember.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Patience, a love for people and languages, respect and empathy. It helps to put things simply and easy to understand.
Share an anecdote related to your subject or your schooldays.
After finishing high school, I left Holland and came to South Africa. I was always told how similar Dutch and Afrikaans were. Well, that is very untrue. I struggled learning Afrikaans and know very well the humiliating frustration that comes with being a foreigner in a country having to learn a new language and fitting in all at once. Many were the times that I was laughed at because I said something "wrong" or inappropriate. This has given me much patience and empathy with anyone learning an additional language.
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced at school?
I spent my early years in South Africa and moved to Holland when I was 9. I was not a native Dutch speaker and often made grammatical and spelling errors. Coming back to South Africa as a young exchange student, I had forgotten all my Afrikaans and went through the same process again! Making a language fun, easy and applicable is the best way to learn a new language I have found.
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general, an element of this particular subject, or something completely different?
I love getting to know people, sharing experiences, uplifting them and helping them improve themselves and their lives. Language allows us to do all of that and more. It brings us together and allows us to touch someone's life. It helps us express who and what we are - from ordering coffee with a friend to whispering words of love to figuring out how the world works.
What makes you a Superprof?
I love the freedom Superprof gives. It allows a tutor a wide spectrum of subjects they can tutor. I take a real interest in my students and this allows me to tailor make a lesson to suit a student using my own preferred platform and resources. I prefer to keep things simple and easy to understand and will use a variety of tools and resources to give my students what they need. I go the extra mile for my students and belief that support and encouragement is much more important in building self-confidence and fluency in a language than grammar and phonetical rules. There is a place and time for everything.
