About Chen I
I am an illustrator and animator with a master's degree in Communication Design from Kingston University (2018) and a Graduate Diploma in fashion & textile from the Royal College of Arts (2019). I have been a freelance illustrator since graduation. Sketching is my passion since I was a kid and I do life drawings and travel journals to record human activities. I coordinate my hand and brain through drawing and learn from unexpected results and mistakes. Besides hand-drawing skills, I also specialised in digital skills such as transferring sketches to digital drawing and creating analogue textures before applying them to digital artworks. I have the skill for hand drawing with mediums like pen, pencil, watercolour, acrylic, gouache, as well as the skillset of Adobe software like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Premiere, and drawing apps on iPad like Procreate and Fresco.

Teaching experience I've been an art tutor for four years and helped kids and adults to achieve their artistic goals. From how to observe to how to draw, and from how to generate ideas to complete the project creatively. I love to see my students express themselves with artworks, and explore their potential by drawing out things in their minds and things they appreciate. I’ve helped students to go to art school and university with outstanding portfolios, and supported uni students to finalise their graduation projects. I’ve also guided no experience beginners to start to draw, and experienced learners to develop their styles further. In terms of subjects, I teach hand-drawing skills like human and landscape sketching, colouring, and finding perspectives, as well as digital software like Photoshop, Illustrator, and Procreate. I would love to share all my creative knowledge and passion with you and see your joy in achieving and improving. Approaches We will design the course content together based on your interests, needs, and abilities, and develop it according to your goals. The courses can be technique-based or project-based. In the technique-based course, I will guide you through a variety of practices and give you related homework to complete in your free time. We will discuss the challenges you had and solve them in the next session. On the other hand, the project-based courses will guide you through the whole process to complete a project that expresses your ideas and generate artwork. This includes initiating ideas, examining ideas, making, experimenting, and evaluating the outcome. My approach is to create an enjoyable and relaxed space to explore your creativity and encourage you to think through making. I will help you cultivate your confidence in art by hand-on-hand guidance.

Perfect! Chen I coached our daughter sketching in pencil over several sessions. She has very strong technical skills and was great at teaching sketching to someone with little experience in that medium. Highly recommend.

Perfect! Niu is a really excellent teacher, extremely patient and explains things clearly so that you understand them.
For example, there are many aspects to Adobe Illustrator that may be intimidating at first, but Niu is able to focus on the key tools and concepts that will get you started and build your confidence in a short time.
If you want to learn how to use Adobe Illustrator, or want to understand how colours and graphic designs work, look no further, Niu will guide you through.
