I am a graduate from the Royal Northern College of Music and I approach my teaching in a calm and positive manner. Building the violinist up slowly and correctly is essential to avoid problems later on and so progress can be rapid and more fruitful as the learning takes place.

Born in England, John Hutchinson represents the youngest member of a family spanning three generations of musicians.
John began his musical journey in his hometown of Newcastle. He undertook initial studies with Iona Brown and Julia Jasinski, before going on to obtain his Bachelors Degree with Honours at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, under Professor Benedict Holland. Currently – through the generous support of Alex Amos – John is studying in London under Dr. Remus Azoitei.
During the 2020/2021 season John undertakes a 16-concert recital tour of the United Kingdom, as part of the Master Musicians International Concert Series and will be a student of Malta Classical Music Academy. As a soloist in previous seasons John has performed Vivaldi to Khachaturian with youth and amateur orchestras and given solo recitals at the Literary and Philosophical Society, EUROPAfest (Romania), Middlesbrough Town Hall Recital Series, amongst many others.
As an orchestral musician, John has appeared in many of Britain’s premiere concert halls, including the Bridgewater Hall (Manchester), the Duke’s Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall (London), and The Sage (Gateshead), and has performed at home and abroad in such festivals as the Liverpool International Music Festival, the Manchester International Festival, Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte and Festival Orchestre Giovanili (Italy). He has worked under the baton of such esteemed conductors as Elim Chan, Sir Mark Elder, Vasily Petrenko, and Vasily Sinaisky amongst others and has also been broadcast on BBC’s Radio 3.
During his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, John was fortunate to have the opportunity to play chamber music in a wide variety of ensembles, leading to numerous performances around the North of England. His exploration of the chamber music literature was enhanced by the guidance of a number of prominent professional musicians, such as members of the Chilingirian Quartet, Elias Quartet, the Sitkovetsky Piano Trio, the Talich Quartet, and Trio Gaspard, as well as renowned collaborative clarinettist Matthew Hunt.
John has been privileged to receive masterclasses from many of the world’s leading musicians – including Levon Chilingirian, Mauricio Fuks, Natalia Lomeiko, and Yuri Zhislin. Inspired by the teaching he has received, John has been keen to give back where he can, and in 2017/18 was selected to support and coach the string section of the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain. He continues to share his expanding musical knowledge through his own private teaching in London, and at The Royal Ballet School & Ealing Junior Music School where he is their youngest violin tutor.
John is thankful both to Jonathan Sparey and Florian Leonhard Fine Violins for having loaned him instruments in the past. John now plays on a True Copy of a violin by Guarneri ‘del Gesu’ ‘Ex-Ruggiero Ricci’ Guarneri del Gesù, Cremona 1734 made by Florian Leonhard and Melina Polizzi. He is also grateful for the support given to him by the EMI Sound Foundation, The Loan Fund for Musical Instruments, The Kathleen Trust and the Elliott & Kayne Families.
John plans to commence his master’s degree in 2022, and to keep finding the best places to eat!
Perfect! John is an excellent violin teacher, and provides a structured, step by step approach, which is easy to learn through a virtual lesson. He is kind, patient, and knowledgeable, and understands how to work with young students.
For the last year Mr Hutchinson has been my son’s violin teacher. I have found him to be a very reliable teacher who sets clear objectives for my son. His teaching has motivated my son who since seems to be enjoy playing much more. I am very glad to have found such a capable teacher who is genuinely interested in his student.
My daughter has had lessons with Mr. Hutchinson for 18 months now. We have found him to be totally reliable, dedicated to the development of my daughter as a musician. His knowledge of technical work and ensemble is at the core of his program. Mr Hutchinson has and is being taught by some outstanding violinists himself (Remus Azoitei, Professor at the Royal Academy of Music and International Soloist) and because of this I feel he is outstanding value for money.
This violin teacher was the first teacher my son has had who actually seemed interested in my son's learning, desires and goals. This teacher individualised a learning plan with clear objectives in each lesson, informal assessment and feedback on his progress each week. My son has become motivated once again and is enjoying playing music. Although young, this teacher is very competent and natural at imparting knowledge to young students. I am delighted to have eventually found someone who is interested in the student!
John is a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and that’s how I know him as I was a student there myself. He already has a few violin students of varying ages and standards in his home county of Northumberland, whom he greatly enjoys teaching. He loves to impart his knowledge onto other people and to watch them thrive as musicians, and so wants to expand his teaching to students in London. I highly recommend him as a teacher due to his positive, patient attitude and passion for both learning and teaching!
