1, 8, 5, 11, 7, 12, 7 (?) what is the next number in this sequence?

This is a typical maths question in a NVR 11+/12+ test, I can help with all the types.

Answers
Always test the relationship between two numbers next to each other in the sequence. Here we see that 8 = 1 + 7, 5 = 8 -3, 11 = 5 + 6, 7 = 11 - 4, 12 = 7 + 5, 7 = 12 - 5, so that the steps are: +7, -3, + 6, -4, + 5, -5. So we are alternating between addition and subtraction, the added numbers are getting one smaller each time, the subtracted numbers one larger each time. The next number is therefore 11 = 7 + 4.
