hmm it's a bit difficult to show this without a white board but the way I'd do it is to put it into columns with the 13 on top of the 87 and a line underneath
25 May 2011
then the first step is to multiply the 3 and the 7 to get 21
25 May 2011
we write the 1 directly below the 3 and the 7 and then we put the 2 to one side to add on to the next number
25 May 2011
then we multiply the 7 by the 1 of the 13 to get 1 x 7 = 7
25 May 2011
now we need to remember to add the 2 that we'd put to one side so we get 7 +2 = 9 we write the 9 below the 1 and the 8
25 May 2011
so our first line of working out should read: 91
25 May 2011
then on the line below we have to write a zero underneath the unit column just under 1 (this is just a rule that you have to learn for the second line of column multiplication)
25 May 2011
next we have to multiply the 8 by 3 = 24 so in the tens column underneath the 7 we write 4 and then we save the 2 for later
25 May 2011
next we multiply 8 by 1 = 8 and then add on that 2 we were saving to get 10, we write this next to the 40 to get a line that reads 1040
25 May 2011
so now we have to add the two lines together - adding 1040 to 91 which gives us a final answer of 1131
