what is Kinetic and potential energy

I'm taking GCSE Sciences as separate subjects and really struggle with physics can anyone help me with the above question please?

Energy is a concept. Something that has energy can be made to "do work" - perhaps move something. A big lump of lead on a shelf could conceivably do work. You could tie a string to it and let it to fall, the string could pull something along or spin a generator. The lump of lead must have had "potential energy" when it was on the shelf. Something moving has energy. A speeding car could be made to heat up its brake pads as it slows down. The moving car must have had "moving" energy. (Kinetic is another word for "moving".) Now your turn - how can you work out the energies from a knowledge of "how fast" or "how high"?
