About Kayla
Hi, I’m a violin tutor with over 8 years of teaching experience and a Bachelor of Music in Early Music, specialising in Baroque Violin. I focus on Irish, Scottish, American Old-Time, and other folk violin traditions, helping students explore the unique sounds and rhythms of each style. My lessons emphasise ornamentation, rhythmic bowing patterns, and ear-based learning, enabling students to develop a strong musical ear and authentic folk phrasing. I often use folk jam tracks, drone tuners, and repertoire-based instruction to make learning interactive and engaging. I guide students in mastering traditional tunes while encouraging improvisation and personal expression. Lessons are tailored to each student’s pace and interests, whether they are beginners or advanced players. I believe that learning by ear and through cultural context deepens understanding and enjoyment of the violin. Beyond technique, I aim to instil a love for the stories and history behind each tradition. Playing folk music can be joyful, social, and deeply rewarding. I welcome all students to explore the violin through rich cultural sounds and traditions, and I am committed to helping them grow with confidence, skill, and passion.

My violin teaching approach focuses on building strong fundamentals while nurturing each student’s unique musical voice. I emphasise bowing control, intonation, tone development, musical expression, and proper posture to ensure a healthy and confident playing technique. Lessons are designed to gradually strengthen finger agility and precision, helping students play with clarity and control. I guide students in exploring dynamics, phrasing, and emotional expression, allowing them to bring music to life. Scales, arpeggios, and technical exercises are integrated to improve accuracy and consistency. I also work on rhythm, sight-reading, and ear training to develop well-rounded musicianship. Beyond technique, I support students in ensemble settings and solo performances, helping them gain confidence and excel in collaborative and public playing. My method encourages patience, persistence, and a love for the violin. I tailor lessons to each student’s pace, ensuring they feel motivated and accomplished. Whether a beginner or advanced player, my goal is to make learning violin enjoyable while fostering discipline, musicality, and personal growth. Every student receives guidance, encouragement, and strategies to improve steadily and perform with expression.
