About Helge
Hello, my name is Helge. I am a conductor and a clarinettist.
I've always been committed to creating transparent and high quality opportunities for music education, both for the general population and for the very best.
From my early artistic successes as a conductor, soloist and principal clarinettist in orchestras and new music ensembles to the present day, I have been active as an educator. Over the years I have gained extensive pedagogical experience as a conductor of youth and amateur orchestras, as a coach of chamber music ensembles, but above all as a clarinet teacher in a wide variety of contexts and at various adult education centres, music schools, conservatories and academies.
I teach at the Universität der Künste Berlin, the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin, the Jazz Institut Berlin and the Carl Philip Emanuel Bach Musikgymnasium Berlin. I also give masterclasses, most recently in China at the Hangzhou Conservatory, where the video (below) was shot.
I studied at the music academies of Detmold (instrumental pedagogy), Frankfurt am Main (main artistic studies) and Amsterdam (postgraduate studies).
Exchanges and collaborations with Yehudi Menuhin, Pierre Boulez, Simon Rattle, Marek Janowski, Giora Feidman, Eddie Daniels, Sabine Meyer and Karl Leister have had a decisive influence on my artistic and pedagogical development.

You'll get quality, comprehensive and most importantly, transparent training. You can study with me online or in my beautiful and easily accessible classroom in Berlin-Schöneberg. You can also combine the two.
Our first meeting will be a clarification of your aims and objectives. Do you want to play in a good orchestra or chamber music ensemble and create the technical and musical conditions for this? Do you want to be able to play a piece as you imagine it? Would you like to be able to improve and naturalise your breathing by learning to use your body? Would you like to be able to work on your reeds? Do you want to improve your practice technique to make better use of your time and progress more quickly? Are you planning to study music and want to prepare specifically for this, or are you already a student and need additional and reliable support for a Masters or other advanced entrance exam, audition or competition? Or perhaps you need some mental support and training to help you feel less nervous when it comes to demonstrating your skills, e.g. at a performance or audition? Your goals will be at the centre of our collaboration from the very beginning and will form the system of coordinates we will use. Based on this, I will suggest a way forward that I believe will lead you to your goal. We will then decide what kind of schedule we want to have.
I use internationally recognised methods, including ABRSM and TRINITY. They provide maximum transparency and allow excellent assessment of performance against transparent criteria. But even if we don't use these methods, I will make sure that you learn to assess yourself and your abilities realistically in relation to your goal. And that you develop step by step, so that you can clearly see for yourself how you are progressing. This is a very relaxed way of working. And, most importantly, it will be a real source of enjoyment for you - my promise!
My teaching languages are English and German. My Chinese isn't great, but it's decent - and getting better.

Details
+ There is no charge for the introductory session. I will spend a total of 30 minutes with you.
+ The prices quoted here are for a 60 minute lesson. Other lesson lengths are of course possible by arrangement.
+ Packages of 5 lessons are valid for 5 months, packages of 10 lessons are valid for 10 months. Again, exceptions can be made in individual cases and by mutual agreement.
+ The more regularly we meet, the more I can accommodate you in terms of price.
+ If we want to work together and your financial situation is a plausible and verifiable obstacle, then there is a solution. In such cases I work on a sliding scale fee model - a fee system based on your income.
+ If you cancel less than 48 hours before our appointment, I will unfortunately have to charge you the full fee. However, if there is a genuine emergency that prevents you from attending through no fault of your own, I will be happy to accommodate you on a case-by-case basis.
+ If you don't have any questions, it's best to book your appointment now. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing you!
