About Hippolyte

I have been giving private lessons in mathematics for 3 years, at high school and license level.

I obtained the "Agrégation externe" in Mathematics (specialization: Probability and Statistics). This competitive exam grants access to teaching positions at high school and undergraduate level. Its program covers the entire "classes préparatoires" and undergraduate program (third year included): analysis, linear and bilinear algebra, general algebra (arithmetic, groups, rings, fields, polynomials), topology, geometry, and in my case, probability and statistics.

I continued with an MSc in fundamental mathematics at Sorbonne- University (formerly UPMC), specializing in differential equations and dynamical systems.

My interests shifted a bit that year, which led me to do this year another MSc in mathematical modeling for neurosciences (still at Sorbonne-University). I will start soon a thesis in the field.

[Who am I?]

"Agrégé" in mathematics and graduate in fundamental mathematics (with a specialization in differential equations and dynamical systems), I am currently ending another MSc in mathematical modeling for neuroscience and I am about to start a PhD in this area. I have been giving private lessons in mathematics for 3 years at undergraduate / "classes préparatoires" level, and for 5 years et highschool level.

[The lessons]

I propose lessons in Paris and in nearby suburbs, at "classes préparatoires" (MPSI/MP, PCSI/PC, BCPST, EC) and undergraduate (1st to 3rd year) level: follow-up, preparation of exercises and "colles", preparation of exams and "concours". Subject taught:
- Analysis (real analysis, differential equations, integral calculus, functional spaces, numerical analysis, complex analysis)
- Linear and bilinear algebra
- Probability
- Statistics
- Geometry
- General algebra (arithmetic, groups and rings; fields and polynomials)
- Topology

All these subjects are part of the program of the "Agrégation externe" (for the specialization I chose: Probability and Statistics).

Lessons in English or French.

[My methodology :]

I develop the practice of mathematical reasoning by working on two different features. First we work on the theoretical lessons, and I give as much global understanding as I can. I never hesitate to take time to work on shortcomings or ill-understood concepts. Second, the student works on exercises of progressive difficulty, which allows him to acquire, step by step, skills and self-confidence.

I also usually insist on the methodology of tests (exams or "concours"), which a training in itself, if you want to give a faithful account of your true level.

Generally speaking, I keep students as active as possible in their learning. Because it is only by producing your own mathematical reasoning that you manage to make familiar notions that may seem, often at first glance, obscure and overwhelming ! In terms of concerte skills, I try to foster two in particular: intuition, which is a consequence of a real understanding, in the student's own words, and method, which enables to turn intuition into full reasoning and actual results at tests.

[Concretely, a typical lesson / series of lessons]:

I start by checking up the student's knowledge on the topic that he asks working on beforehand. Thus I can identify his difficulties, and then start working on the relevant points of the course.

Then comes the really active part for the student: he practices with exercises of progressive difficulty. The goal is to build good thinking habits. This produces a solid basis for then facing new problems. And it is the first source of self-confidence, essential for reasoning effectively, without wasting time unnecessarily, and perhaps for enjoying it!

Thanks to this regular practice, the student is leaded towards always more autonomy before mathematical thinking: because he experiences by himself trial, error, and ultimately the right way of solving a mathematical problem.

Once this work done on the basic knowledge, we work on practicing for exams or "concours" themselves, which require a specific know-how and a different attitude. Indeed, student need to build the habit of working in a pragmatic way: without trying to do absolutely everything, but rather showing as much as possible from they can do.

Of course, not all students and situations require to work as much on each of these aspects, everything depends on the student!
