Poetry is a beautiful art form that makes typical words in any given language sound like honey to our ears. There have been many poets throughout the centuries that have inspired modern-day learners to take up poetry. Also, it’s worth stating that poetry is also taught in schools across the UK to help students develop an affinity for various forms of writing. But, what are the technical aspects and characteristics of poetry? Let’s find out.

What is the structure of a poem?

For a poem to be considered a poem, it must follow certain rules and standards. The laws of writing are not there to restrict beginners of poetry but rather to ensure that they are staying true to the art form. So, what is the structure of a poem? Poems are composed of certain elements such as meter, rhyme, scheme, verse, and stanza. Before students can dive deeper into comprehending works of poetry, they must understand these characteristics. Meters are the rhythmic structure and are dictated by the number of syllables. Rhymes are quite self-explanatory. Yet, to have rhymes in poetry the last one or more syllables within the separate words match. Schemes refer to the rhyming pattern within a verse of poetry. Verses are used to describe the relationship between rhyme and meter in a poem. And, finally, stanzas are a group of lines that are within the verses of a poem. Stanzas follow a similar pattern and these patterns need to be respected in order to be called a poem. Knowing the structure and components of a poem is the best way to teach poetry and slowly work on your original pieces.
