Biography

Diego Perez is the man writing under the alias Yung Pueblo. Born in Ecuador, he immigrated to the United States as a child, he grew up in Boston and attended Wesleyan University. He was raised in activists circles in Boston, where he witnessed people coming around together for a common cause.

Shortly after graduating from college and getting clean from drugs and alcohol, he began practising Vipassana as taught by S.N Goenka. Diego had never considered writing, but once he discovered meditation, he was able to express himself through poetry.  His writing career–and viral poems– followed soon after.

The pen-name Yung Pueblo means “young people” and is meant to convey that humanity is entering an era of remarkable growth and healing, when many will expand their self-awareness and release old burdens.

Today, Diego resides in Western Massachusetts with his wife, where they live quietly and meditate daily.

Meditation and Yung Pueblo's poetry

S.N Goenka and Vipassana

Born in Mandalay, Burma in 1924, he was trained by the renowned Vipassana teacher Sayagyi U Ba Khin (1899-1971). After fourteen years of training, he retired from his life as a successful businessman to devote himself to teaching meditation. Today he oversees an organization of more than eighty meditation centres worldwide and has had remarkable success in bringing meditation into prisons, first in India, and then in numerous other countries.

Vipassana or insight meditation is a clear awareness of exactly what is happening as it happens.

Vipassana, which means to see things as they really are, is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation in Buddhism. It was taught in India more than 2500 years ago as a universal remedy for universal ills, i.e., an Art of Living.

Vipassana is a meditation technique that uses mindfulness and calm through various breathing practices, combined with the contemplation of 'impermanence' as observed in the bodily and mental changes. This is in order to gain insight into the true nature of this reality.

Yung Pueblo is very active in the meditation practice, he does an hour of Vipassana per day in addition to five minutes of metta–loving kindness in the mornings and evenings.

Poetry and themes

Yung Pueblo is rooted in the differences and divisions within our society and human civilization. Thus, his poetry is strongly inspired by universal themes and emotions that unite us.

His poetry is also motivated by the individual transformation and how this transformation can impact the world at a larger scale–the collective. Yung Pueblo is a poet that combines deep healing and simple words to describe this process and self-transformation, which he hopes will inspire his readership.

This type of poetry is focused on the inside journey of healing at every level, personal and collective. No wonder, there are so many people around the world that identifies with this author and other poets that are expressing how humanity is hurting.

Clarity & Connection

While Clarity & Connection is the bridge between inner work and outward harmony. This book is about what happens after your personal journey of getting to know and love yourself. Once people experience a little more of clarity through meditation, therapy or other forms of introspection, clarity and connection become deeper with friends and family and any intimate relationship.

Lighter

Last April, Yung Pueblo announced the release of his next paperback book, Lighter, where he will reveal more about his personal experience and healing. Despite being a non-fiction book, we can expect to keep reading some poetry in Yung Pueblo's upcoming book.

During the years when I had abandoned

myself, my mind felt undeniably heavy.

I knew I needed to find a clear way

to help me feel lighter.

The beauty of poetry

Poetry is a literary genre that evokes a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience or a specific emotional response through language chosen and arranged for its meaning, sound and rhythm. If you want to read simple poetry that is focused on themes related to healing and self-love, Yung Pueblo is a great author to start this discovery.

The beauty of poetry is the way it allows authors to express themselves about difficult or beautiful feelings and move people that reads them. Another beautiful characteristic of poetry is how it evolves with our time and civilization, William Shakespeare's poetry is not the same as nowadays poetry, but it is as beautiful because it captures an epoch, and emotions that have transcended time.

If you are new and just discovering poetry, we recommend you to read as much of it as possible, from different authors, literary styles. It is always a good idea to start with the classics, like famous British poets, at the same time that you read contemporary authors. This will allow you to have a taste of the diversity and richness that poetry can capture, this will hopefully inspire you to start writing your own poems.
If you find yourself needing help to orient yourself in the poetry world, you can always reach out to a Superprof tutor near you that can guide you in your poetry journey and discovery, whether you want to know how to make a poem or want to study its content, you can find a Superprof tutor near you!

Allowing yourself to feel and think about an emotions or experience will also let you be more confident in your writing and inspiration. If you are not necessarily looking to write poetry but rather you are looking to read it or watch videos of authors and poets performing their art in order to find joy, peace and solace, Yung Pueblo might be a great author to start with as well.
