Famous designers, dressmakers, and tailors have dedicated their lives to the creation of clothing items that have made an impact on modern society.

Can you imagine the world today without a Burberry Trenchcoat, Chanel Suit, or Calvin Klein Slip Dress?

By possessing a mastery of sewing techniques, a variety of fabrics at their disposal, a lot of thread, sharp sewing needles, and a hardworking sewing machine, a sewist can create everlasting art.

Therefore, without further ado, to pique the interest of budding tailors or designers, Superprof will consider some of the best places to attend sewing classes in the Belfast area.

Fundamental Hand Sewing Stitches to Learn From the Beginning

Learning how to sew can be an excellent chance to explore your artistic side and create some beautiful things such as embroidered pillows, dress shirts for men or young boys, a personalised quilt, or a showstopping dress.

That’s right, learning how to sew doesn’t only serve the purpose of hemming pants, mending rips, and replacing lost buttons.

Nevertheless, many beginners often feel that stitching together something useful for the home or another person may take years to perfect. Think sewing amateurs again; after learning how to thread a needle there are basic hand sewing stitches that can easily be learnt during lessons with a more experienced sewist from the beginning.

But how and what are they called?

Without further delay, the following are two essential hand sewing stitches for beginners:

  • Chain Stitch: known by seamstresses and tailors as a series of loops that are sewn onto fabric, creating a design that can either be functional or decorative. How is it completed? By following six easy to remember steps, 1) The sewist needs to stitch from the back side to the front side of the fabric. 2) Insert the needle into the top side of the material in the same area and keep a loop of thread on the top side. 3) Bring your needle back through the right side of the fabric only a short distance away from where the needle went into the material. 4) Insert the needle through the loop of thread on the front side of the fabric. 5) Pull the needle through the fabric and anchor the loop. During this fifth step, it’s imperative not to pull the thread too tight so that the circuit maintains the same shape. 6) Repeat the past five steps to create a chain of stitches that will make any throw pillow look fantastic!
  • Blanket Stitch: you just bought a new blanket and want to personalise it with some colour thread you picked up at the sewing store, what to do? Thankfully there’s a stitch for that! By adhering to the following basic steps, anyone can master the blanket stitch, 1) First of all, thread your needle and knot the tail end of the thread. Start by sending the needle from the back of the blanket about a little more than half a centimetre away from the border. 2) To get the stitch correctly anchored, poke the needle up from the back again, so that the needle comes out the top at the spot you started your stitch; this will create a loop around the edge. 3) Send your needle under the loop stitch you just made; this can be done by poking the needle under the stitch sideways towards the side of the fabric. It is essential to state that while this gets your thread anchored, it is not an actual first stitch. 4) To complete your first “true” blanket stitch, poke your needle down from the top, then bring your needle up from the back, and through the loop of thread. Voila, you’ve completed your first blanket stitch! Keep following the four previously mentioned steps to stitch your entire material successfully.

The stitches mentioned above are exclusively done by hand to give the fabric a genuinely authentic and hand-made feel. It is highly recommended to consider some video tutorials to understand how the stitches are completed fully
