However, we strongly remind you to take your time and read through all the information you find during your process. Here, we will describe how the dynamic of the fees and subscription work if you are a tutor or a student.
First, let's explain a bit more about Superprof's history and values.
The Superprof Backstory
Superprof launched in 2013 when the mainstream internet was beginning to grow. Since then, we experience the internet at another level as consumers and as products, depending on the website or platform we use.
2013 is known as the year of the Internet of Things. Exponential advances in technology made new and improved methods of communication possible. Connecting disparate devices to the internet—from refrigerators to robotic hoovers was the next big wave.
Anything was possible, and the internet kept on expanding its possibilities.
With all the entertainment and information available on the internet in 2013, there was nevertheless a gap in the market. This gap was related to education.
At the time, education was mostly thought of as something to be delivered face to face—despite a long history of correspondence courses and distance learning, and educational formats that had been going on for centuries.

In 2013, thanks to advances in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and better webcams, online education—especially one on one learning began, and Superprof was ideally positioned to ride that wave.
After just one year, Superprof welcomed their 100,000th tutor to the platform. Two years after that, Superprof went worldwide. We'd already built a strong presence in France where we first launched—we became the #1 tutoring service just a year after launching the programme, and other European countries keenly awaited their chance to debut the Superprof model for their students. Countries like Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, and Italy and then expanded worldwide with Mexico, the USA, and Australia until we reached 42 countries!

Superprof has gathered around 1001 subjects to choose from, and to learn from! There's a wide variety of tutors specializing in a host of different subjects on Superprof, some academic and others targeted to health and wellness, and everything in between.
Superprof: the bridge of online education
In the relatively uncharted waters, Superprof began its operations, there were many ways to sustain its services:
- partnering with outside firms who would pay us to post ads on our sites
- collecting a commission from tutors' per-lesson fees
- charging students a percentage of their per-lesson fee
- setting up a subscription service to allow students the maximum availability and access to tutors
The first idea was a non-starter. We're about students getting the help they need and the tutors exercising their passion for teaching; not about promoting other companies' products.
Collecting a commission from tutors' fees was likewise unfeasible. To give our tutors maximum flexibility, we insist on their right to set their own rates. It would be very difficult for us and for them, to have a successful platform and a good tutoring experience, without knowing what income to expect. Besides that, why should we take anything away from tutors, who sign up to our platform to exercise their passion for teaching?
The same logic applies to fees from students except, for them, it's a need to learn, not to teach.

The fourth option became our solution, and this is how Superprof decided to become a bridge for online education. Superprof decided that offering subscriptions yielded the best possible value for the student's money and learning experience.
So, where other tutoring platforms may require their tutors and students to pay fees, Superprof makes things simple.
In order to have full access to the Superprof platform learning experience, the student can subscribe to our platform. Once, subscribed, they have access to more than 10 million tutors around the world and whatever hourly rate the tutor lists on their profile page is the per-lesson amount that they will collect.
We think that Superprof for tutors is an efficient way for passionate mentors to launch themselves into a tutoring business, all while protecting students' interests and parents' pocketbooks.
Superprof and its review system
Does the Superprof business model work? Besides the explosive growth the company has enjoyed over the past eight years, reviews, and testimonials on sites such as Glassdoor, Indeed and Trustpilot prove that, overwhelmingly, both tutors and learners are satisfied with the way things work at Superprof.
Of course, there are negative reviews; it would be suspicious if there were none, even if nobody had any actual complaints to make. These complaints are actually a good way for Superprof to address the things that are unclear or not working properly for the different users.
For the most part, students' negative reviews address the monthly subscription fee. These critiques all point in the same direction: students were unaware that they were agreeing to a subscription when they signed on with Superprof.
To put it simply, there are 3 relationships and possible exchanges that take place on the Superprof platform: Superprof and the student, Superprof and the tutors and the students with the tutors through the Superprof payment platform.
Superprof and the students
Students pay a £39/month fee which gives them a Student Pass. This subscription enables the student to have full access to the platform, and tutors, and guarantees a safe payment method between the parties.
The student pass is renewed monthly. Students can cancel their subscriptions at any time on their profile via the "Student Pass" tab by clicking "Suspend".
Superprof and tutors
Tutors are not charged a fee for setting up their profile; nor do they pay Superprof to maintain their profile page.
Tutors are free to set their per-hour rates based on whichever criteria they feel are relevant, be it their level of education or teaching expertise, their geographic location, some places where the living costs are higher, and the type of subject they teach.
Students and tutors with or without Superprof
Your subscription fee is separate from the per-hour fee your tutor advertises on their profile page.
Once you connect with a tutor and you both agree to take your partnership off the platform, you have the right to end your subscription. You will still pay your tutor their fee, though.
Should a tutor decide to filter their lesson payments through the Superprof platform, they will be charged a 10% processing fee—but there is no mandate for any tutor to do so. They may set up their fee collections in any way they see fit.
It is very important to have a clear understanding of the services that the platform provides and how you want to get involved with it as a student or as a tutor.

Superprof's Terms and conditions
Superprof's role is to connect tutors with students; that's the extent of the company's involvement between the two parties. It might help to think of us as three separate entities, where each has responsibilities and can agree to the terms and conditions or the term of use of the Superprof platform; which we encourage you to read carefully and fully before you sign up for a Superprof membership or any other service available online.
To gain access to Superprof's 19 million+ tutors, the fee you pay depends on the country you live in. In the UK, it's £39 per month; it is roughly equivalent in other countries, allowing for exchange rates.
Also, note that tutors are encouraged to offer their first tutoring session for free to the student, but it is not mandatory.
We're honoured to be the bridge between students and the subjects they want to learn more about. That's really what drives the Superprof model.

Great platform and our experience with our tutor has been great. The only one criticism (and a very big one) is the subscription fee not being made explicit. I booked my children language lessons which they really enjoyed, but I may now have to tell them that we have to cancel as I did not realize there was an additional £29 a month fee charged by Superprof, which is not affordable to us. It looks like I am not the only one to have been caught out by this from the website comments. Please be more transparent!

But I agree with you that the purpose of the subscription should be more clear and transparent and how to cancel and any other minimum clauses eg right to cancel within 14 days

This is a binding contract under UK law and Superprof have clearly breached this over and over again.

Very disappointed: Think twice before using this company: We used a tutor back in July 2021 (and fully paid the amount), but this company kept charging us on a monthly basis since then (16 months x £29 = £464).

If tutors and students decide to move off the Superprof platform, they are free to choose their preferred payment method. Most commonly used methods are direct bank transfers or PayPal, however, it will be up to you to contact the tutor and discuss the preferred and most secure method.
Just a heads up, Superprof doesn’t moderate or guarantee payments that are made outside of our platform.
If in doubt we recommend proposing the lessons through our platform. Superprof will hold the funds for 24 hours after the lesson took place to guarantee its safety.
We give students and tutors a 24 hours time period after their lessons took place in order to signal issues regarding their lessons.
If necessary, When an issue is signalled, the payment cannot go through until an investigation can be concluded.

I agree I signed up thinking this was the first payment method for tutors. Then I got billed another 40 pounds for the actual session it’s self. Duped into paying £1,102 and never even took a lesson!!I was lured into a “subscription” trap while searching for teachers on a particular topic, I fell victim to Superprof’s misleading communication tactics. Their messages cunningly implied that a platform fee would only be charged after booking a lesson with a teacher contacted via the platform. However, to my dismay, I never even booked or began my lessons but been charged every month since my search in 2021. In the first month, I received a solitary email mentioning the renewal, but afterwards, there was complete radio silence for over three years. Unbeknownst to me, I continued to be billed £29 per month, resulting in a staggering total of £1,102. What’s more infuriating is that Superprof failed to reach out regarding my inactive account. This deceitful strategy reeks of extortion. £1,102 paid, not a single lesson taken, and an account clearly unactive. The customer care team when contacted kept blaming me for not having understood properly their business model… I wonder who does in their right mind do?? I pointed out that their initial communication was totally misleading “Remember, you will only be charged £29 for the Student Pass if a tutor accepts your lesson request”… THERE HAS BEEN NO LESSONS, NONE SO WHATEVER!! SCAM!

do not recommend Superprof. My bank declined their charges because their business was listed as a photography store, not a tutoring service. I was also unable to pay a tutor online since my bank kept declining the transaction. Despite my attempts to contact Superprof via text and email, I never received any response. They took my $50 and I never used their service. This company is not legitimate, and their lack of customer service is unacceptable. They simply take your money and don’t follow through.

It says here that the student pass fee will not be charged if the tutor refuses. The tutor we contacted refused but we were still charged the Student Pass fee .

im look to use this , when i pay the £39 subscription does it work as a bank balance and that i can use that money in super prof and use the 39 pounds to buy lessons , or is the 39 pounds the price to pay for the platform and i have for pay £15 pounds out of my pocket extra for class ? and what happens if i dont like my class do i get my money back , please break what the 39 pounds are for

Thanks for getting in touch!The £39 subscription on Superprof is a monthly fee that gives you access to contact as many tutors as you like, but it does not act as a bank balance for lessons. The lesson fees are separate and paid directly to the tutor, so if a tutor charges £15 per lesson, that cost is in addition to the subscription.

I think i have accidentally deleted my account so therefore I can’t cancel my subscription. I have tried to contact you but it’s been impossible. My tutor was excellent but we had to part ways in February. You have continued taking money from my account since. I have had to go to the bank to stop paying the monthly your monthly fees .
