Rosalía: Spain's Modern Pop Queen

“El Mal Querer”, was her thesis to obtain a degree in Music, and of course, the spearhead towards her stellar musical career. Since her beginnings, in 2017 with her album "Los Ángeles", everything has been going up and up, adding one success after another for Rosalía Vila Tobella (her real full name).
It was with her third production, “Motomami”, that she achieved global success, accumulating:

Born in Barcelona in 1992, Rosalía, trained at the Higher School of Music of Catalonia and specialized in flamenco, a genre that she has managed to successfully combine with reggeaton and other urban genres.
Her influences range from classic flamenco artists like La Niña de los Peines to contemporary musicians like Kanye West and Beyoncé, which became extremely noticeable in the multiple cultural references and symbolism of her lyrics.
Among her most notable collaborations are those with artists such as J Balvin, with whom she released "Con Altura", a global hit, as well as with The Weeknd in the remix of "Blinding Lights" and "La Fama".
These collaborations have further expanded her global reach, allowing La Rosi to connect with audiences across diverse musical genres.
Rosalía is definitely one of the artists of her generation, since her first album, she is a composer, lyricist, producer…
The singer has experimented with electronic, bachata and jazz, positioning her as a fresh, creative, bold and above all innovative artist. Songs like "Saoko" and "Despechá" have consolidated her capabilities and she is considered a “multidimensional” artist.
Having established herself as a feminist, creative icon with overflowing charisma, there is no doubt that she will continue adding albums and hits, the Rosalía phenomenon has only just begun.
Carlos Alcaraz: The unbelievably talented heir
The youngest member of this list of famous Spanish-speaking people, and the biggest revelation of Spanish Sports during the past years, is definitely, Carlos Alcaraz.
Let’s talk about someone who at only 20 years old has become the natural heir of Nadal’s throne in the world of tennis, won over Novak Djokovic, participated in Olympic Games and earned 4 Grand Slam titles.
🎾
His father was also a tennis player
🏆
Trained by former world number 1, Juan Carlos Ferrero
🚀
Youngest No. 1 in ATP history
Alcaraz has taken the professional circuit by storm since he arrived in 2020 (he debuted just before the pandemic); it was only 2 years after when he made history in 2022 by winning the US Open, becoming the youngest No. 1 in ATP history
Carlos is earning thousands of fans not only for his efforts as a sportsman, but also because of his humility and likeable personality, get to know this rising star:
In 2023, Alcaraz continued his winning streak, remaining competitive in all Grand Slam tournaments and standing out on the grass at Wimbledon, where he won his first title in said tournament. In the final, he defeated Novak Djokovic ending the Serbian's 4 year streak in the London tournament and showing that he was ready to compete at the highest level.
The rivalry continues to grow after “Carlitos” second consecutive Wimbledon win against “Nole” in the tournament in 2024. And even more tension has been added after Alcaraz lost his first Olympic final against Djokovic in the recent Paris Olympic Games.
Despite his defeat in the singles Olympic tournament, Alcaraz scored another achievement for his CV by playing next to one of his most admired figures during the doubles tournament: Rafael Nadal.
Having played alongside Nadal, and despite not getting a medal together, he’s still the number 1 in line to inherit Nadal’s Spanish Tennis Crown and with some luck, he could achieve what his compatriot did with his two gold medals in the Olympics (singles and doubles, in 2008 and 2012, respectively).
Alcaraz, whose game stands out for his aggressiveness, speed and surprising maturity, seems clearly destined to lead the new generation of tennis. His story is still in the making, who could stop his meteoric ascent?

Rafael Nadal: Spanish Sportsmanship
The story of Rafael Nadal, one of the most famous Spanish celebrities around the world, is one of tenacity, determination and great accomplishment. His tale begins in 1986, when he was born in Mallorca. As a youth, he displayed an impressive gift for tennis, which would be efficiently refined by his uncle Toni Nadal.
The ATP (The Association of Tennis Professionals) would first glimpse Nadal’s prowess when he won his first official match under them in 2003. Over his career, he would go on to win an astonishing 92 ATP titles.
You might have heard Rafael Nadal go by a certain nickname… ‘The King of Clay’. This nickname was rightfully earned by the Tennis aficionado, who won over half of his titles playing on clay courts. For readers who aren’t aware, tennis can be played on a variety of different surfaces, including clay, grass, ‘hard’ and carpet, each of which affect the speed and bounce of the tennis ball in play.
Nadal’s career is often viewed through the lens of his rivalry with another famous tennis player, Roger Federer. The two sportsmen are considered the greatest male tennis players of all time, holding a collective 42 ‘Grand Slam’ singles titles between them.
Despite facing each other on numerous occasions, the two have called each other friends, stating that their rivalry remains on the court.
Matchs disputed between them
This is surely a testament to Nadal's reputation as a good sportsman and a humble, hard worker, who lets the results of his play speak for itself.
Rafael Nadal is also known for his work outside the court, where his ‘Fundación Rafael Nadal’, provides funding and support for young people, especially those with adverse financial or medical situations, to have access to sporting and healthcare facilities.
His charitable activities are a gentle and compassionate contrast to the fierceness and aggression he shows on the court. In a way, Nadal can be said to embody a certain chivalry which has been refreshing to follow throughout his career.

Sergio Ramos: Talent and Leadership
Another internationally renowned sporting legend produced by Spain is Sergio Ramos. Football fans the world over will instantly recognise his name, and most of them will agree that he represents the upper echelon of talent in recent football.
Ramos was born in 1986 in Seville. He displayed his potential as a youngster and was scouted for the youth academy of Sevilla Football Club, where he would continue to display his prowess and promise until his eventual professional debut in 2004
Ramos played both at the national and international level many times, and his career is studded with accomplishments in both domains, including being the most capped player for Spain of all time.
His accolades include:
- 131 international wins for Spain
- 4 UEFA Champions League Titles
- 5 La Liga Titles
- 2 Copa del Rey Titles
- 4 Supercopa de España Titles
- 3 UEFA Super Cup Titles
- 4 World Cups (1 Win)
He managed to do all of this as a centre back and occasionally as a right back, proving the importance of a strong defence in ‘the beautiful game’ despite the great appeal of the coveted offence positions.
With over 100 goals in his career - even with his main duty being their prevention - Ramos is one of the highest scoring defenders in football history.
Off the pitch, Ramos is also known for being highly active in charity, and throughout his life in the public eye has helped raise millions for various charitable causes. He is not without his controversies, however, as he holds the record for the most red cards of any LaLiga player.
Fernando Alonso: Spain’s Prowess Behind the Wheel
Fernando Alonso is a Spanish Formula one driver whose name is probably recognisable to just about any motorsport enthusiast.
Alonos’ story begins in Oviedo, Asturias, a region in North West Spain. He was born in 1981, and it wasn’t long before he discovered his passion for driving, behind the wheel of a go-kart at a young age. He had a kart racing licence at the age of five and won his first race at the age of only seven!
His knack for achieving victory would soon see him winning go-karting championships and eventually, he would make his way through the echelons of motorsport leading to his debut in Formula One in 2001.
Alonso would race for a number of different teams in Formula One:
- Minardi
- McClaren
- Renault
- Toyota
- Ferrari
His skill is unquestionable, not that any fans of the sport would dare, considering his status as a double world champion.
Despite this, Alonso claims that his greatest accomplishment is his Premio Principe de Asturias award, which is a regional award from his home region, given to those who make ‘notable accomplishments in sciences, humanities or public affairs.’
Much like the previous entries to this list, Alonso is also active in charity. He has been a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and, similarly to Nadal, donates to foundations to facilitate and enable young people to access sporting facilities and opportunities.
Despite having a thrilling and dangerous career, Alonso’s most damaging car-related accident happened in a supermarket car park, where a car turning into the park knocked him down. As a result, he needed reconstructive surgery!
Queen Letizia: The most Down To Earth royal
The north of Spain has given a lot of popular figures. Another native from Oviedo - and equally or even more famous than Fernando Alonso- who causes enormous pride in the region is Queen Letizia.
Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano - her birth full name - was a normal citizen with ambitious professional aspirations that allowed her to work in some of the most well-known media in the written press and then jump to national Spanish television as an anchor.
Letizia, had already gained the sympathy of thousands thanks to her presence, and professionalism, before becoming part of one of the most traditional European royal houses.
Her father and grandmother were important figures on Asturias radio
Holds a master in Audiovisual Journalism and a degree in Journalism by Complutense University of Madrid
In the early 2000s she had a successful career as a television anchor
Letizia met King Felipe in 2002, in an intimate gathering organized by the head of the television station where she worked as a presenter.
There, in a casual dinner with only 20 people present, Felipe fell in love with the journalist and after a few months of a relationship that was first kept as a secret, they got married in 2004 in the middle of a gigantic media coverage.
Letizia and King Felipe VI have recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary; together they have two daughters: the teenagers, Leonor, Princess of Asturias, and Infanta Sofía. Her marriage has always been under the scrutiny of the press, but she has always shown a remarkable performance in her royal duties.
Letizia has intensely worked in areas such as education, infancy rights, and health-related causes such as the fight against cancer and promoting scientific research related to rare diseases.
Carlos Sainz Jr.: Making A Name for Himself
Another of the most famous Spanish athletes nowadays, and a remarkable figure of the Formula 1 is Carlos Sainz. This Spanish sportsman- who grew up having his fellow countryman Fernando Alonso as a role model - is currently a constant source of danger on the tracks for pilots Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen or Charles Leclerc. At just 30 years old, the racer counts with 3 Grand Prix victories and:
until 2024
The Madrid native, and one of the few Spaniards along with Fernando Alonso to be part of the Ferrari team, started - like most of the athletes in his sector - at 12 years old in karting, debuting in Formula 1 in 2015.
As the son of the successful Carlos Sainz (an icon of rallying karting and double winner of the Dakar Rally), Carlos Sainz Jr. has successfully shaken off the label of nepotism, being part of the most recognized teams in the motor world such as Red Bull, McLaren, Renault and Ferrari (replacing Sebastian Vettel).
Carlos, winner of the Singapore Grand Prix, the Grand Prix of Australia and the British Grand Prix, also practices golf, boxing and surfing and will continue to rise through the tracks in 2025, along with the British squad, Williams, where his outstanding technical ability, smart tactics and effective management of complex roads will for sure keep him on the podiums for the next three years.
Penélope Cruz: Flare for the Dramatic
Taking a break from sporting figures, let’s have a look at one of Spain’s other best celebrity exports… Acting talent. It only makes sense that a country known for its cultural extravagance and excellent entertainment would produce internationally recognised acting skills.
Penélope Cruz was born in 1974 in Madrid. While she did not necessarily come from an acting pedigree, she did have supportive parents and according to herself a ‘happy childhood’ where she made the connection early on that playing pretend with her childhood friends was in some ways the same as acting.
Cruz started to gain attention for her acting skills in 1992 when she played a character in the Spanish Romantic Comedy ‘Jamon Jamon’. Her future husband and fellow famous actor Javier Bardem was also part of the cast of this film.
She went on to land a role in the film ‘All About my Mother’ which was directed by another name that could have graced this list as a main entry: Pedro Almodóvar.
Cruz along with the famous director would collaborate many times with great success, and around the same time, she transitioned her career over to Hollywood, where she remains an icon and continues to feature in films thanks to her incredible diversity and fluency in English, Spanish, and Italian.
Penélope is also known for her humanitarian work, where she emphasises her support for children’s rights and the safeguarding and care of refugees.
Other places you might see her are on the covers or pages of fashion publications, as she has become quite the fashion icon as well after her rise to fame.

Antonio Banderas: Talent Behind the Mask
For our last entry… we can't skip one of the most famous Spanish-speaking people, or at least, the one who put Spanish talent on the Hollywood map in recent decades. The young Antonio Banderas was, believe it or not, an aspiring football player before he found himself a career in acting.
He preserved his athleticism and used it instead to bring to life dashing heroes and charming characters, like in his arguably most recognizable performance as Zorro, from ‘The Mask of Zorro’.
This star was born in Andalusia (1960), the southernmost region of Spain. He was quite young when he started acting, with his first roles being in the 70s and early 80s.
Similarly to Penélope Cruz, Antonio got a major break in acting through his work with the director Pedro Almodóvar.
However, his breakthrough to the international stage was earned by his performance in Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Desperado’ in 1995, a story of love, tragedy, and revenge.
Banderas eventually extended his talent to directing as well, his first film being ‘Crazy in Alabama’, which he directed in 1999.
Keeping up with our theme, Banderas is also an active philanthropist and chooses to invest his time and effort off-screen to support AIDS research and children’s hospitals. As noble a cause as anything we’ve mentioned thus far.
