What Platforms Should you Use?

If you’re going to wow the world with your words outside of those you read off the script, then you’re going to need a platform.

You can think of social media as a digital stage, where you perform for your adoring fans and communicate with them directly, giving them a chance to get to know the real person behind the mask.

But which digital stage is best?

Which social media platform will best highlight your strengths and give you a strong opportunity for professional growth?

Well, unfortunately, there’s no one platform that will propel your acting career to the next level.

In fact, we would recommend that you cast a wide net when it comes to social media in order to appeal to the widest audience possible.

That means to increase your visibility and interaction levels you’ll want to have at least a minimal presence on all of the big social media channels.

There are three platforms that will instantly come to mind for most people, and then several others that can also be very effective if used correctly.

Here are the top three platforms we recommend you use to shout from the rooftops and draw attention to your acting abilities:

  •  Instagram
  •  Facebook

Once you’re established on these platforms and you feel like you know what you’re doing, you might like to experiment with the following two to see if you can get better results:

  •  YouTube
  •  LinkedIn
  •  TikTok

How Should you Post on Each Platform?

As you might imagine, each social media platform requires a slightly different approach.

When you log in to Facebook, you expect to see photos accompanied by blocks of text. When you go to Instagram, you scroll down your feed hoping for a photo to jump out at you. When you visit Twitter, you’re interested in reading interesting snippets that resonant with you or catch you up with your favourite personalities.

With that in mind, here are some tips for posting to each platform as an actor:

Twitter

These days, if you want any kind of breaking news or life updates you’ll probably head to Twitter.

Unlike the other two social media platforms here, with Twitter you’ll have to be less reliant on striking visuals to draw people in. That’s right, this isn’t the place to post your beautiful new headshot.

So what can you post on Twitter?

Anything that makes you seem relatable to your audience.

If you have something interesting to say and it ties in with what’s trending on the platform, let the world know. People are drawn to personalities and character, so if you can prove that you’re more than just a talking head, they’ll warm to you.

Post about taking your pet to the vet, or having a morning cup of coffee before the big shoot. Basically anything that shows to your fans that you’re a real human and not caught up in all the glitz and glamour of the acting world.

Instagram

With Instagram, it’s all about image.

So yes, this is the platform you want to post your headshots to.

The difference between Instagram and Facebook is that on the former platform you have a second or two to stop someone who’s scrolling their feed in their tracks with a striking image.

The goal is to make someone double take when they see your image, or spark an emotion which will make them click that heart icon and boost your visibility.

Facebook

Facebook is all about telling stories, which makes sense given that there’s a book in the name!

Here you can still post photos like you would on Instagram, and you should, but they should only tell half the story. The other half you’ll need to write out yourself.

You’re an actor, you’re guaranteed to have stories to tell whether it's how you got into acting, what makes you tick, or who your inspirations in life are.

If you’re struggling to come up with ideas, post a recent photo with some background information or dig through the archives of your mind for an acting-related anecdote.

What About the Other Platforms?

While the three aforementioned social media platforms form a strong foundation for your online presence, there are also a couple of others that you can use to great effect.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a must for anyone who is looking for work.

Even if you aren’t actively seeking work now, one day you will be. As such, it’s in your interest to at least have an account that lists your accomplishments to date.

Every time you land a new role be sure to add it to your LinkedIn account.

You can even spark life into your profile by adding media such as a demo reel, just so others can get a feel for how you go about your work.

YouTube

YouTube has really taken off in the past five or so years.

However, it’s a platform that takes a lot of time to grow on so it requires patience.

As an actor, though, someone who’s comfortable in front of a screen, YouTube could be an incredible resource for you.

The first step to success on the video-sharing platform is to come up with a content strategy. This may sound intimidating, but really all it means is figuring out what kind of content you will post and how often.

For example, some of the most popular videos these days are ‘A day in the life’ and ‘Q&As’. All you have to do is record your day from breakfast to dinner or open up the floor to questions from your viewers.

Schedule each type of content (once a week for example) and you have a YouTube presence.

TikTok

In some ways, TikTok is the new YouTube.

The main difference is that videos are much shorter with the newer platform and the audience is generally younger.

But again, if you want to stay relevant it’s a great platform to take advantage of with short videos about anything from life as an actor to how you train your voice for a role.

How to Market Yourself as an Actor on Social Media

To market yourself successfully as an actor on social media, one of the most important things to remember is to stay active.

That’s how people built YouTube channels from 0 viewers to several million. It’s an all-too-familiar story these days, and most of those YouTubers will tell you they just stuck to it and the audience came later.

It’s so easy to get discouraged when you don’t yet have many followers or fans on social media but the reality is it takes time to build an audience.
