"If you can't stand watching it be produced, you shouldn't be eating it." -Anonymous

In recent years, there has been a lot of awareness concerning the inhumane treatment of animals on farms to produce eats, daily products, and meat that we ingest as part of a healthy diet. Many associations and scientists have found that not only is a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle better for animals but it will also benefit the planet for generations to come.

So, although most of us probably recognise that becoming a vegan is the more socially responsible decision to take, it's a difficult one. How's that? Well, that's because it might involve eating less of the foods that we have grown to love such as Sunday roast, Toad in the Hole, Bangers and Mash, or Yorkshire pudding.

But, did you know that since veganism is rising in popularity, there are multiple alternative methods to make your favourite meaty or dairy-filled dishes using plant-based ingredients? Many of the alternative cooking guides require using new food items and changing your cooking methods but the final result is similar: delicious food!

So, without further delay, in today's article, we shall examine how it's possible to make vegan Yorkshire puds that still taste brilliant.

What is Yorkshire Pudding?

Before starting to discuss all of the vegan recipes that have been concocted to create Yorkshire puddings, it's important to first define them. First known as "dripping puddings" in the 1700s, Yorkshire puddings took the name they have today when Hannah Glasse named them that in 1747 in her cookbook.

Also known as "puds", Yorkshire puddings are delightful little sponge cakes that have been likened to pancakes in texture. They are made from a batter of milk, eggs, flour, and water. Organisations that oversee the specifications of a Yorkshire pudding claim that it must be more than 4 inches tall. If not, it's not considered a classic pud.

Yorkshire puddings are extremely diverse since they can be served as an appetizer, with a savoury dinner, alone as a snack, or with a sweet accompaniment such as ice cream or jam.

Though Yorkshire puds have been around for a long time, they are still one of the most beloved things about England. How do we know that? Well, in 2012, a poll was conducted by T-Mobile UK that revealed that Yorkshire pudding was the tenth thing that people loved the most about Britain. Also, since 2007, the first Sunday of February is Yorkshire Pudding day which is a moment to celebrate it across the United Kingdom and learn more about its unique history in British culture.

Is it Possible to Make Vegan Yorkshire Puddings?

stop eating animal products

While there isn't any meat in the traditional Yorkshire pudding recipe, it's worth stating that classic puds require cow's milk and eggs. Though milk and eggs aren't the work of the Devil, for vegans they are unacceptable. Vegans do not eat anything that comes from animals such as meat, dairy, and eggs; they enjoy a 100% plant-based diet.

Most vegans are changing their eating habits to stop the killing of innocent animals and to save the planet since raising livestock is a major cause of climate change.

Though some might view veganism as restrictive, becoming vegan is now extremely popular in countries worldwide and there are plenty of alternatives. For instance, instead of meat that comes from bigs, cows, or chickens, vegans enjoy plant-based meat options that are made entirely of vegetables and taste surprisingly good. Additionally, to avoid dairy products there are many nut-based kinds of milk, kinds of butter, and spreads.

Therefore, becoming a vegan in 2022 isn't the end of the world since there are so many options to keep eating the same dishes that you have grown up enjoying including Yorkshire pudding. Since the only ingredients that need to be supplemented with something else are milk and eggs, it's possible to cook vegan Yorkshire puddings.

Vegan cooks have crafted delicious Yorkshire puds using nut-based kinds of milk such as soya or oat. Some chefs have even ditched milk altogether and are using aquafaba (the liquid from a can of chickpeas) and water instead. But, what about the eggs? While there are some vegan types of eggs, they are generally expensive; therefore, some vegan home cooks have discovered that dijon mustard provides the texture and consistency that eggs would've normally given to the Yorkshire puddings.

So, you could say that anything in this world is possible, even vegan Yorkshire pudding!

However, if you want to eat fantastic vegan options of your favourite foods such as Yorkshire pudding, you'll have to learn how to cook new recipes.

Without further delay, we'll take a look at a fantastic vegan Yorkshire pudding recipe that is straightforward and inexpensive.

A Virtual Vegan

One of the top-rated recipes for vegan Yorkshire puddings on Google, A Virtual Vegan's step-by-step instructions to make Yorkshire puds are relatively simple to adhere to. Make sure you have the following ingredients:

  • 75 g of plain flour,
  • 75 g  chickpea flour,
  •  teaspoons baking powder,
  • ¼ teaspoon fine salt,
  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric (OPTIONAL),
  • scant ½ teaspoon dijon mustard,
  • ¾ teaspoon apple cider vinegar,
  • 90 ml aquafaba,
  • 360 ml of water,
  • a healthy oil such as olive, coconut, or avocado to grease the muffin pan.

Now for the instructions follow these steps in chronological order:

  • Preheat oven to 220,
  • In a medium bowl, add the all-purpose flour, chickpea flour, baking powder and salt and whisk them together.
  • In a jug, combine the mustard, apple cider vinegar, aquafaba and water and whisk them together.
  • Pour the combined liquids into the dry ingredients and whisk together until smooth and bubbly. Pour into a jug to make pouring quick and easy, then leave to rest for 10 minutes.
  • While the batter is resting, prepare your muffin pans. Put the oiled muffin pans in the oven on the old baking tray that preheated in the oven, for 10 minutes. By then they should be absolutely smoking hot.
  • Very quickly, remove the muffin pan from the oven, making sure to close the door to keep the heat in. Now, pour the batter into the hot oil in each well of the pan. Stop pouring once the oil is just about level with the rim of the well.
  • Cook the puddings for at least 30 minutes, but maybe up to 35 or 40 minutes until really golden and crispy and until the insides have dried out to your liking.
  • Serve immediately.

If the previously mentioned recipe isn't to your liking, there are plenty of other vegan Yorkshire pudding recipes on Google or Pinterest. Alternatively, you can learn how to make vegan Yorkshire pudding by following the steps of private cooking instructors that are available for hire on sites such as Superprof.
