About Johari
I am a first class history graduate from the University of Cambridge, currently in the process of training to be a commercial lawyer. Whilst I chose to specialise in black history and the history of the British Empire towards the end of my degree, I built up to this from a strong understanding of Western historical themes and events. In the past I have provided academic tutoring (11+, GCSE and A Level) alongside admissions support for students applying to top universities in the UK. Primarily I support students making applications for history and politics courses but I can also provide some guidance in relation to the other humanities.
With regard to university admissions my strength is in providing guidance in preparation for the Oxbridge admissions processes but much of this approach can be applied to make an excellent application to any top university. Last cycle of the six students I mentored, three went on to secure offers from Oxford or Cambridge. In addition to my 2+ years of mentoring experience, students that I tutor will benefit from my three years of experience as an outreach ambassador for my college at Cambridge. In this role I worked closely with our admissions tutor to deliver workshops to young people about Oxbridge admissions and higher education more generally. As a result, I have a firm grasp of the philosophy behind the rigour of the admissions processes used by top universities which strongly informs my approach.

Given the emphasis that top universities place on intellectual curiosity, my approach to preparing applicants for the admissions process is heavily academic and similar in style to the approach that I take to preparing students for A Level examinations. As I do for academic tutoring, I begin by working with you to identify the parts of the material that engage you the most. Most students find particular themes that are more interesting to them. In the past these have included: high politics and the motivations/actions of individuals; war and conflict; the roles played race, gender and other identities; economics, finance and industry; culture and the media.
The most striking difference between my approach to admissions and exam preparation is that I will encourage you to explore areas of your subject outside your academic course syllabus in order for you to develop your broader interest in the field. As we work on this, the style of my teaching will continue to be discursive, building upon your critical thinking skills and looking at new sources and perspectives to enrich your understanding of topics that have sparked your interest. The two most important things for you to get out of this teaching experience are a strong grasp of the material and an ability to reach your own conclusions about that material.
Where helpful I am also happy to spend time on foundation skills for the humanities such as comprehension and reading material critically or developing a clear and compelling writing style. These are skills that will continue to develop as you progress academically and that the strongest students really benefit from.

Jo provided me with invaluable help during my application to Cambridge University to study History. Her advice enabled my historical reasoning skills to develop greatly, and this certainly contributed to the success of my application.
The guidance that Jo offered me was mainly tailored around historical reasoning, since at the time I was preparing for the Cambridge History entrance exam, which predominantly tests critical thinking skills. Her communication of historical methodology was always very clear, concise and eloquently put, whilst the guidance itself that she offered was always incredibly in-depth and comprehensive. Jo very obviously has a firm knowledge as to the technicalities of historiography and the intricacies of different types of historical writing (including the impact this has on the relationships between form, audience and purpose in a source) and this meant that her advice was incredibly useful in enabling me to approach the primary sources I evaluated in the exam in a balanced and enlightened way. Since I faced unseen primary sources in the exam, Jo’s advice was valuable in helping me to understand how to comment on diverse evidence types without having a grounding in the particular historical area I was faced with.
Jo also provided me with very helpful advice as to her own techniques of historical study; such as simplifying the study of sources by breaking them down to their individual components. Meanwhile, Jo also prioritised her advice so the application process might be more manageable for me.
Jo was simply an incredible source of guidance to me; and I could not recommend her tutoring more.I am delighted to write a recommendation in strong support of Johari’s services on Superprof. Having studied alongside Johari at Cambridge, I have been unfailingly impressed by her commitment, hard work and enthusiasm for her subject. Johari demonstrates not only passion and talent, but also the genuine independence and self-motivation necessary to teach other. She has excellent interpersonal skills, and shows a genuine care and concern for her peers. In short, Johari possesses all of the skills and personal attributes that will make an excellent tutor.
