About Paula
So far I have been a private tutor for four years. Within this time I have privately tutored three people: a 6 year old girl in French, a 14 year old boy (with attention deficit disorder) in all his high school subjects, and a 14 year old boy in Spanish.
All of them were fully satisfied with the lessons and the results, and in the case of the two boys the grades improved considerably. As for the little girl, she approached the French lessons with enthusiasm and motivation, and moved from having no background at all to having a solid A1 level within a year.
References may be available - in Spanish - on request.

My name is Paula, and I am a 20 years old Spanish student currently based in Manchester, UK.
From an early age I have enjoyed studying and learning,so when I began the Secondary school one of the first things I wanted to do was to help others who did not enjoy it as much to do well on their studies.
I come from a country where the educational system consists on memorising and repeating, so I am aware of how tedious any subject - and specially a language - can be.
Therefore, my classes are ruled by the principle that we are all different, and while some may be good at memorising and repeating, for others it can be a real struggle. By saying this I do not mean to incur that memorising is not important - it is, but learning is a way more complex and comprehensive process.
Consequently, my classes are all different, and based on 5 main things:
- Get to know the student, and try to adapt the subject to its personality so that he/she gets to see it as something if not fun, at least enjoyable.
For instance; the 6 year old girl I taught French to loved princesses, so instead of making her write the colours and parts of the body in a vocabulary list and memorise it, I made her memorise them by describing different Disney princesses. In this way, she used the knowledge she was acquiring - thus actually building long lasting knowledge - and had fun at the same time.
- Give constructive negative and positive feedback.
I truly believe that motivation is the key to success, but a student who constantly receives negative feedback will never see the end of the tunnel. It is important to learn which are one's limits, explore them, and surpass them little by little to avoid getting lost in the way.
- Constantly come up with written and interactive exercises that go back and forth on the material studied not to lose the work that has been done. This is specially important when studying a language, which means that in my classes you can expect a lot of pieces of homework.
- Receive feedback.
I am aware that I am not perfect, so I also expect to grow and learn with my students. That means that I am always open to constructive feedback, and will definitely take it into account.
- Support the student at all times.
Me myself I am a student, and although I am not a supporter of the last-minute doubts before an important exam, I know that for some people having that kind of support can be very relieving. Consequently, I will give my contact details and compromise to be in close touch.
In the case of Spanish lessons, I will also agree to look at cover letters, CVs, essays and pieces of work of the kind before the student submits it.
