About Josiah

Teaching is my calling. For nine years I’ve turned confusion into clarity, guiding students from high-school basics to university-level proofs. After earning a double-major B.Sc. in Mathematics and Physics from a globally accredited university, I jumped straight into tutoring and never looked back. My trademark? Patience, empathy, and the knack for explaining tough ideas in plain language—until the “aha” moment arrives.

My lessons are very hands on and patience is one of my stronger points. I'll ensure that you understand everything before we move on. I'm very good at understanding what confuses students and how to explain it in a manner that they understand. My lessons are catered towards students as early as High/Secondary school all the way up to University/College. level A typical lesson plan is pretty flexible and can include a targeted look at anything confusing you or an in depth look at some homework or teaching a topic from scratch.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Mathematics has always been a passion of mine. What captivated me was the binary nature of it, you either got the answer right or wrong. There was no room for subjectivity or the teacher's interpretation, it solely relied on an individuals performance and comprehension of the subject. Tutoring on the other hand came very naturally to me over the years. While attending a high school equivalent, I found myself assisting my peers in comprehending challenging topics. This organic inclination towards tutoring grew from that point onwards.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

My favorite subject area would be calculus. I feel like it's the beginning of a students real journey into the meaty parts of mathematics. Trigonometry was the bane of my existence through college, but any area of maths that students dislike is typically something that they don't understand. I've now grown to like trigonometry, but it's one of my lesser loved areas.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I was blessed to have exceptional mathematics teacher's throughout my life. I probably only had one teacher's whose methods I disagreed with. As a result I had a plethora of role models to compare myself to.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor should be one that takes time to ensure that students understand what they have been taught. Not just assuming that the concept is easy to grasp or that they got it simply because they said they understand. Students often belive or claim that they understand things when they don't quite fully grasp the concepts.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I had one particular math teacher that had a saying, "it's either my way or the highway". He always insisted that we do the questions exactly the way he wanted them done or he would mark it incorrect. In retrospect, perhaps he was worried about seeing new methods of doing work that he didn't necessarily know/understand. I'm completely against this line of thinking, I believe students should be allowed to approach mathematics from creative perspectives and allowed to flourish as opposed to forcing them into boxes.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

One of the biggest challenges Ive had as a math teacher is understanding the diverse learning needs and abilities of students. Teach too slow, and the faster students interest isn't piqued. Teach too fast and slower learners will miss too many fundamental concepts. I've since gotten much better at quickly differentiating the categories that new students will fall into and catering classes to suit
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

One of my greatest passion lies with computers. Whether it's playing some game in my free time or learning new concepts/prepping a lesson, I love using and building computers
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

I considee myself a superprof due to my early start in teaching. This early experience has afforded me a unique advantage in comprehending the dynamics of teaching from both a students and a conventional teachers standpoint. By combining these perspectives, i have developed a heightened awareness of the challenges and stumbling blocks that students often encounter when grappling with unfamiliar concepts. This dual approach has enabled me to more effectively anticipate and address specific pitfalls students encounter during the learning process.
