About Stuart
Hello! I'm Stuart Thiel, a Ph.D. in Computer Science with a passion for teaching and mentoring students in the world of programming. With over 20 years of industry and academic experience, I have honed my skills in Java, C++, Javascript, and Python, and I am excited to share my knowledge with you.
My journey began as a tech entrepreneur, where I founded and managed a successful tech company offering full-stack support for SMEs. This experience allowed me to develop practical, real-world skills that I now bring into my teaching. I transitioned into academia to pursue my passion for interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative teaching methods. As a part-time faculty member, I have taught a wide range of courses in Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Engineering departments, promoting a unique pedagogical approach that encourages productive failure and engaging assignments.
One of my notable projects includes creating ChessMod, a popular Minecraft mod that has garnered a vibrant community of players. This project reflects my love for combining creativity and technology to create engaging educational experiences.
I am committed to equity and inclusion, as evidenced by founding an endowed bursary for alternative education and actively participating in various departmental committees and advisory bodies.
