Can anyone tell me how the French Health System works please? Like does the state pay for everything or do patients have to pay costs? thanks 😛

The French healthcare system is publicly funded. French employees pay about 20 per cent of their gross salary – the self-employed pay even more - deducted at source, to fund the social security system, known as Sécurité sociale. A significant proportion of this money goes towards public healthcare, to which every legal resident of France has access under the law of universal coverage called la Couverture maladie universelle.

The state is paying for everything. You have to pay your doctor appointment yourself but after the consultation the doctor will swipe a health card - all french people have one when they are born no conidtion to have it. This card register your consultation and few weeks after that the payment is reimbursed on your bank account, Same process at the pharmacy, hospital and specialist. You advance the money and then it is coming back to you. The only exception are for dental and vision care where a part is not funded by the gouvernement, In this case French pay for an extra health services called a mutelle. It cost around 30 euros/months and ensure that you are 100% reimbursed on the services quoted above. French system is really good and make people feel safe but it cost a lot to the country as well !!! everything is paid by citizen on taxes ...
