how do genes affec my apperance, body and health?

i am doing revision for a biology gcse and this is on the syallbus and i havnt got a clue. The questions next to it are: what are genes and how do they affect the was organisms develop? why can people look like their parents , brothers or sisters but not be identical?

All animals of the same species will look slightly different because their genes will be different, apart from identical twins, where the genes are identical.

Genes are working subunits of DNA. DNA is a vast chemical information database that carries the complete set of instructions for making all the proteins a cell will ever need. Each gene contains a particular set of instructions, usually coding for a particular protein.
