  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I started showing my passion for music when I was a toddler - I was raised in a Philippine Music Bar which was shortly named after me! In true Philippine nature - I first learned how to sing on a Karaoke Machine that would score my pitch clarity of which I am sure strengthened my voice, musicality and relative pitch. When the Karaoke machine was on standby, my Papa serenaded me and my Mami all day and night. My Papa sings, plays the guitar, piano, produces and sound engineers of which I now also do too!

I then moved to England when I was four years old, of which I was taught by the Gracious Gospel Singing Teacher by the name of Clyde Forde, also known as "JJ" from the age of 11 years old. JJ taught me true Vocal Pedagogy and Gospel Performance - in both Singing and Piano. Still to this day, he teaches me how to sing and how I can teach my students too.
  • Is there a particular type music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Neo-Soul is my most favourite genre to listen to and perform. I even have a selection of D'angelo's songs as my alarms and ringtones. :)
  • Explain to us the most difficult or 'riveting' lesson you could personally give to one of your students.

The most riveting class that I could ever teach to a student would be the "Art of Perseverance" - this is a personal quote that I try to teach in every single one of my lessons. Through teaching my students to repeat their skill, they strengthen their skill every single time! It takes 10,000 hours to master a skill. :)
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I believe that the Double Bass is one of the most complicated instruments to master as it demands a lot of discipline (like any instrument). It requires an incredibly strong sense of pitch because the Double Bass is the biggest and lowest pitched instrument in the string family! Because of the lower frequencies, the ear must be specifically trained to the lower notes (especially amongst an orchestra or band) that a Double Bass plays and leads.
  • What are your keys to success?

My keys to success can be shortened down to three rules:

    Listen. Try. Repeat.

I like to simplify everything that I do - personally, emotionally and professionally. I like to listen to a song, lesson or story. I then try to think about what I learned and give the theory a try. And then finally, repeat. Repetition = Success.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Eleanora Fagan, also known as "Billie Holiday": I would have loved to have met the late Billie Holiday as I believe that she is the true definition of a "Crooner" - she sang every single song with pure and utter emotion with the vocal timbre of a horn instrument. I studied Billie Holiday for my Music Degree of which I learned in her autobiography that she learned how to sing by copying Louis Armstrong and his trumpet through a gramophone. She quoted, "I try to improvise like Les Young, Louis Armstrong or someone else I admire. What comes out is what I feel." I believe that if I met her in a jazz bar in New Orleans I would truly learn the essence of how to be a truthful, fearless and courageous Woman, Musician and Political Figure.

Michael Eugene Archer, also known as "D'angelo": The epitome of a true Neo-Soul Artist. Multi-Instrumentalist D'angelo truly captures the essence of experimental Groove, Soul, Jazz and Gospel. He learned how to perform in church and I really do hear his Gospel Vocality and Musicality in every song that he creates and performs. I would love to hear about the story behind the songs that he creates, his experiences of both stardom and simplicity and his views of the Music Industry now.

Erica Abi Wright, also known as Erykah Badu: My Neo-Soul Inspiration! Through her music, I have learned timeless wisdom, strength and insight. Her song "On and On" was the first Neo-Soul song that I ever listened to, learned and adored. I even performed her song "On and On" for my Final Music Project when I studied my Bachelor of Music Degree at the Institute of Contemporary Music. I have learned so much about my own vocal timbre, pitch clarity and musical sensibilities through her artistry.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your musical journey, or your days at 'music school'.

"What a blessing it is to know what you love so that you can set the intention."

This was a comment that I once saw on a random Facebook video, I still do not know who said it or where the origin of the quote comes from. I saw the comment around 5-7 years ago and I have never forgotten those words - I truly agreed with every piece of my soul. Being a musician since I was a small child, I always believed that surely following the journey of music with confidence, forgiveness and grace the journey would eventually fall into place.

This anecdote gave me the strength to not only study Music, it also gave me the inspiration to move to Australia one day with a 40 litre backpack and a hopeful heart!
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I, too, am a student. Any Educator would know that we are all merely students of life and that there is always something to learn. I like to teach in the way that I was taught in Church - through call and response and most importantly, Soul.

For my first lesson, I ask my students what song that they could only dream of being able to sing. Immediately, I challenge the student to sing the song on their very first lesson. How? I like to figure out the key of the song, match the key of the song to the student's range that I believe would be comfortable for them and then I begin teaching the song line by line, note by note. Just like how I learned in Church :D.

"Every child is an artist. The problem is to remain an artist once they grow up." - Pablo Picasso
