I am a keen advocate of 'active recall' and 'spaced repetition' and feel like this was and is the most useful and efficient study technique for both understanding and retaining information.
Essentially 'spaced' repetition simply means revisiting the material, but in a smarter way, so that we remember it better. Because 'spacing' the repetition in this way interrupts the 'forgetting curve' and we are able to store information much more concretely in our long-term memory.
And 'active recall' is the process of 'actively' putting the effort in to recall the information, rather than passively absorbing it. i.e it is far more useful, when revisiting material to have a go at recalling the information or problem, without the textbook open, or without any external prompts.
So getting a feel for the technique and grasping the 'problem-solving' part of the question, is far more useful when tackling new and different problems. Sometimes I even encourage students to have a go at a question, before they are even familiar with the material, because the very act of actively putting effort in, strengthens the memory synapses in the brain! It's actually really interesting neurobiology and we can use it to our advantage when it comes to revision :)
