Like it or lump it, what we call artificial intelligence (AI) is here to stay. In many ways, these platforms aren’t so different from past productivity suites (office software) from the early days of personal computing. The trick is to find the optimal AI tools for students, and to use good judgement in applying these tools. Fortunately, even the free ChatGPT tier for students has many tools to offer, the best of which we explore here.

ChatGPT for Students: Enhancing Study Techniques
Over the 30-odd years of computer product development, many platforms came about to support students' learning efforts. Across cyberspace, learners could find flashcard applications, note-takers, mind map creators, spell- and grammar checkers, and so on. The trouble is having to go from one platform to the next to get the most out of all these utilities.
AI platforms are working towards centralising all of these functions and more. We focus on ChatGPT to outline how using one platform can help streamline students' work1.
Creating Study Materials
That which is used, develops.
Hippocrates
Have you ever wondered why you have to do homework and sit exams? Those common student tasks follow the Hippocrates philosophy. Using your knowledge helps you make intuitive leaps which, in turn, helps you get a firmer grasp on the concepts you study. ChatGPT academic assistance lends a hand by providing you with utilities to manipulate and use what you've recently learnt.
Making Difficult Concepts Clear
Providing summaries is one area where AI platforms excel, and none are so frequently used as ChatGPT2. You have two ways of achieving helpful results.
Enter text
Enter a text into GPT's chat box and prompt it for a summary. Ask for further clarification, if needed.
Ask a question
Ask a targeted question about your subject and prompt ChatGPT to elaborate, if needed.
This is truly one area where ChatGPT shines. You can have as long an exchange as you need to make sure you understand every facet of your topic. You may (should!) ask ChatGPT to provide supporting evidence, just to make sure you (and it) got everything right. The last thing you need is being steered wrong by an AI when studying for exams!
Never accept ChatGPT results without making sure that they are factual.
Using ChatGPT for Writing and Research
ChatGPT is built on a large language model (LLM) which, itself, digested billions of pages of writing. By now, it's well-known that OpenAI trained its LLM on Reddit data3, but it also learnt from sites like ResearchGate. So, you can rest assured that ChatGPT has quality information to share.
Conducting Research
Just the mention of sites like ResearchGate suggests that ChatGPT has access to deep knowledge on a broad range of subjects. You can search for a paper and prompt ChatGPT to summarise or explain it for you4. Or you can ask an open-ended question about your study topic, refining your questions until you get the information you need.
When you write a paper, you will typically have to cite your sources.
Building a respectable bibliography to paste at the end of your research paper can be an onerous task. Fortunately, this is another task ChatGPT can take on for you. It knows all about citations because of the vast amounts of text it absorbed during its creation. That's one of ChatGPT's features that makes it a top tool for students.
However, you cannot task your chatbot to search for sources independently. That's because it builds bibliographies on pattern recognition - what the citation should look like. It predicts likely authors, paper titles, and other pertinent information5. To avoid such mishaps, you can provide source details such as author, paper title, and date published, and prompt ChatGPT to generate the citations for you.
As always, review and fact-check your work before turning it in.
Drafting and Editing Your Paper
This is another area where ChatGPT has gone from strength to strength. You can engage in thought-provoking back-and-forth conversation with your chat module to develop your ideas. This will help you decide which direction to take your writing in. As a tool to develop essay outlines, it can't be beat.
Compliance bias is another well-documented (and unfortunate) aspect of all AI models, not just ChatGPT6. These platforms tend to validate what people say rather than provide correct information. It doesn't mean you should avoid using the tools ChatGPT offers. It only means that you should review its responses with a critical eye and push back when you see something is off.
Preparing for Exams with ChatGPT
For students facing exams - GCSEs, A-Levels, or university-grade papers - preparing for the ordeal can be anxiety-inducing. With all the AI tools uncovered so far, you may feel confident that you can use them to help with exam preparation. But ChatGPT has yet more to offer struggling students.
Starting in early 2026, the Department for Education began integrating AI into specific aspects of the national curriculum. In 2025, the Department for Education (DfE) published its Generative AI: Product Safety Expectations and Generative AI Framework for Education, followed by additional guidance in 2026 encouraging schools to develop pupils' AI literacy7. Rather than introducing AI as a standalone subject, the DfE recommends embedding AI concepts into existing curriculum areas such as computing and digital literacy. Pupils are encouraged to understand how AI systems work, evaluate AI-generated content critically, and consider issues such as bias, privacy, copyright, and responsible use.
Creating Mock Exams
Granted, at the university level, integrating AI into courses is moving apace. However, at the lower levels, moves ahead are made much more cautiously. While your school may have integrated curriculum aspects, it's far more likely you'll have to manually input the information you wish ChatGPT's help with. These are the most efficient ways to generate mock exams.

Being able to recognise patterns of mistakes in your responses is one of ChatGPT's most valuable capabilities. Such might include logic flaws, incomplete reasoning, and not answering the question directly. These are the types of errors that cost exam-taking students crucial points.
It's like ChatGPT is telling you, "You're not thinking about this the right way." Such a response should cause you to reflect on how you perceive and use the information you have.
The more you interact with this platform under a "Be an experienced tutor" prompt, the more you will hone your skills at applying the knowledge you have. Mastering that skill will go a long way towards satisfying exam requirements.
ChatGPT Time Management and Other Helpful Features
So far, all the functions you've read about are accessible, to some degree, on the free ChatGPT tier. However, if you'd like more targeted guidance or more flexibility to engage with AI, the paid tier is the way to go.
The Standard ChatGPT Plus plan costs £20 per month, regardless of how much you use it.
In this page's introduction, you read that the scheduler function is not available for free access. But that doesn't mean you can't use ChatGPT for some degree of planning if you're not keen on paying for access. For instance, you might prompt it to create a customised study plan based on specific criteria. Here's an example of a prompt you can adapt for your own revision:
"Create a one-week GCSE Biology study plan focused on cell division, including mitosis and meiosis. I have 1.5 hours available to study on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Break each session into clear tasks, including learning key concepts, reviewing notes, practising exam questions, and testing my understanding. Include study objectives for each day and present the plan in a clear table."
This is a great way to create an incremental study plan targeting gaps in your subject knowledge. You may enter whichever variables you need - subject/topic, length of study time, and hours/days of study. Best of all, you can prompt ChatGPT to create as many of these plans as you need.
With paid access to ChatGPT, the platform's planner will send you reminders that you're due to study. The free-access level will provide you with a downloadable study schedule for you to stick to. Another bonus of paid access: you don't have to continuously ask for study plans.
AI Assistance
In all, AI can rank among the best tools for students to improve their writing - but not just writing. The key, of course, is that you use these tools judiciously. You cannot hand your tasks over to your AI assistant and expect flawless results; you must take the lead and let AI help you manage your studies.
Even at the 'free for students' tier, you have plenty of resources to diversify your studying. You might create video animation to explain cell mitosis/meiosis - to stick with our earlier example. Or you could create a video using your class notes to get a visual representation of what you learnt during class. As long as you verify your AI's responses, you can count on it as an always-available study partner.
