Have you used a bunsen burner in the classroom - if so your teacher would have explained the different flames. There are three main flames - depending on whether the holes at the base of the bunsen burner are open/closed or half-open. The heat produced will change from coolest (when the holes are closed) to hottest when the holes are completely open. One is the safety flame and never actually used to heat anything. Which do you think it might be? I am available for private tutor session if you would like more help!

Yellow safety flame - Safe becasue you can see it easily and know it is there. Not used for heating because it creates soot. Silent blue flame - Used to for gental heating and is silent and not very visible. Roaring blue flame - Strongest heating setting and is made of two cones. The outside cone is the flame and it is blue , the inside cone is unburned gas that is purple.
