ratio and proportion

The total number of biros ordered is 135, 35 of which are coloured, how do I work out the proportion and also the ratio to its lowest form, it just will not sink in

The proportion is simply the fraction of coloured pens to the total

So we know there are 35 coloured pens out of a total of 135. So the proportion is 35 out of 135 or 35/135

When simplifying this ratio just think about the times table that both numbers are in

When working out the ratio you must work out the number of pens that are not coloured. This 135 - 35 = 100

They are both in the 5 times table. There are 7 5s in 35 and 20 5s in 100 so the ratio is then simplified to 7 : 20

What is the ratio of 18:10?

To work out the ratio you firstly look at the two numbers in the ratio and check to see which times table they are both in. 18 and 10 are both in the 2 times table. So then we can simplify this ratio by dividing both numbers by 2. So the answer is 9:5. Another way calculating equivalent ratios is to multiply both numbers in the ratio by the same number. For example, if we multiply both numbers by 2 then we would get 36:20. If we multiplied them both by 3 we would get 54:30 and so on and so on….. So to summarise some of the ratios that are equivalent to 18:10 are 9:5, 36:20, 54:30….
